I try to reason with Mother Nature  but you know women they have a mind of their own.

55 on Wednesday, now an ice storm.... Expected to freeze solid tonight.

... sometimes it makes for pretty, but also a PITA if you lose trees, power, etc.

I've been somewhat nervously watching the weather in my mountain area the past several days. I know that since last weekend there's been maybe 3 to 5 inches of snow. There's more to come tonight and Saturday; or at least pretty good chances of more. Weather.gov says maybe an inch or two. They are not always right; could be less, could be more.  ???  It's not all that cold, lows about 25 forecast, except for Sunday night when they say a dip to 10 is possible.  :o

I have a small load of trim lumber I want to take up to the cabin, and I'd like to do a little more interior work. So I'm crossing my fingers for a break. The snowmobile won't handle it, or the miter saw, etc.

I have to wait until Sunday because of other stuff. We'll see what Mother Nature has delivered up there. We'll give it a shot and file a later report.

I also just took delivery of a pair of new heavy duty tire chains.  :)   tirechains.com   And I'm taking my snowshoes.

I remember years ago when I rode snow mobiles we had a cabbose that we pulled behind for extra passengers.  Couldn't haul anything real bulky but it would certainly take the saw and some other stuff.

We ended up with about 1" last night.  I needed some drywall but when I was at the big city I was afraid to haul becuse of the chance of rain or snow.  Maybe next week if we get a couple clear days.

I had to break down and get new tires for the truck the other day.   :o.  10ply are not cheap.  Have always run Steeltex by Fireston but they quit making them.  Got the replacement.  Run into new chains with ice cleats deals for $82 a set.  Ordered two sets.  Other than the extra time per day to install I should make it on the mountain when it turns to ice.  We will see.

Snow!!   :(   I don't think there's much chance of making it uo to the cabin right now, even with 4x4 and chains. From NM Roads Info...

Difficult Driving Conditions
Description: Difficult driving conditions on NM 4, mile marker 19 to 46.  Roads are snow packed.  Reports of about 8-10 inches of snowfall in that area.   :o  Crews are plowing the roadway.

My turn off Hwy 4 is at mile marker 33; approx 2 miles of that might be plowed, but the last two would not be.

My neighbor up there is going to see what it's like and call me later today.

MTL it's snowmobile time.

We're going into a little cold snap here in the U.P... The high tomorrow is 3. Tomorrow night will be 12 below, with wind chills down to 30 below zero. A bit nippy for this time of year...

Well here is some pictures of the ordeal that transpired on Novemeber 26th and described in my cabin post.

" But I have 4 wheel drive"

Unless you have chains this don't mean squat when there is ice involved.

If you look just behind the ambulance you will see the blazer on it's top.  The wrecker just lacked inches of going backwards on top of it.

This was the fatality truck that the ambulance was trying to reach about a mile beyond where it slid off the road.

With the ambulance in the road, forrest service, and wrecker this individual thought since " I have 4 wheel drive" I can make it.  NOT

We had a sander slide off the road in Oregon one year -

We were expecting thunderstorms today but only got maybe a quarter or half inch of rain.  I applied a simple fix to the problem we were having with water coming in on the tops of the sliding glass doors and I'm hoping for a real storm to test it out.  We had a similar rain like this back in October before the fix and rain came in.  No rain came in today.

I would really like this fix to work.  Aside from the awesome feeling of doing something really clever, the next step would be a lot tougher.

No snow here at the coast, but people still plow into each other with the first rain.  Yes, the street -is- oily.  Just like last year...

I think I'll just stay in until January 5.   :P

MountainDon

Well, I'm back. Snow but not as much as I thought there would be.  :)

I made it to within a quarter mile of the cabin.  :(  Which actually pretty good.

Details, pictures on my cabin thread

This is said to not be a true story but it is a cute explanation of the ancient saying.

Quote
Every sailing ship had to have cannon for protection. Cannon of the times required round iron cannonballs. The master wanted to store the cannonballs such that they could be of instant use when needed, yet not roll around the gun deck. The solution was to stack them up in a square-based pyramid next to the cannon. The top level of the stack had one ball, the next level down had four, the next had nine, the next had sixteen, and so on. Four levels would provide a stack of 30 cannonballs. The only real problem was how to keep the bottom level from sliding out from under the weight of the higher levels. To do this, they devised a small brass plate ("brass monkey") with one rounded indentation for each cannonball in the bottom layer. Brass was used because the cannonballs wouldn't rust to the "brass monkey", but would rust to an iron one.

When temperature falls, brass contracts in size faster than iron. As it got cold on the gun decks, the indentations in the brass monkey would get smaller than the iron cannonballs they were holding. If the temperature got cold enough, the bottom layer would pop out of the indentations spilling the entire pyramid over the deck. Thus it was, quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

It feels about like Wisconsin here this morning, but I have the joy of knowing it will change within a few days as opposed to a few months here!  :)  I haven't gotten far from the fire all morning except to take care of the dogs.  I'm recharging their "heaters" in the oven as I type and will have to take them back out in a little while.  It was 71 yesterday when we got out of church.  By about 5 o'clock yesterday, it had dropped 30 or 40 degrees and the wind was howling.  I saw this poor gal in Braums when I stopped to get milk and she was wearing shorts because she'd gone out when it was still warm.  At that time, it was right at the freezing point, and she didn't have even a windbreaker.  The wind chill here was holding steady at 0 degrees when I checked earlier.  The high is only 23.  Brrrr!  Wish I had some beef to make chili!

22 and freezing rain. Suppose to get worse as day goes on

18 and snowing here in NE Ok.

MountainDon

Currently 28 in the high mesa desert at home, with light snow melting as soon as it hits the roads, but sticking to grassed areas.

24 in the mountains, heavy clouds, probably snowing there. (Probably as the weather station doesn't have a heater to melt the snow and record the water.)

I test fired the snowmobile and all seems well.  :)
