Looks like there is some rain headed our direction. It is NAFTA rain coming up from the south. I hope it doesn't get interecepted at the border.
I have done so much with so little for so long that today I can do almost anything with absolutely nothing.

Border Patrol is afraid to do their job - fearful of a Bush cabal prison sentence.  It'll get through.

When it rains here this time of the year with a little breeze it gets to be like a giant evap cooler. Nice relief from the heat. I actually feel like going out and doing things.

Yesterday was an odd day - forecasted to be 99 degrees, the high was 82...  we even had a little rain, so most of the day it was in the 70's - nice change - it is only 78 degrees right now - some cloud cover still - not much wind - when that happens we don't get a lot of solar or wind power - but I like the coolness.  I'm going to pickup another four L16 batteries when I go back to the valley so we can store more power.

I need to get out of this inferno

We are well into our rainy season. Both here in the high desert and in the mountains. We've been spending 95.9 percent of our time up there. It's 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the home base desert. The humidity routinely runs above 30-40%. As the rain rolls in we can watch it roll up to near 100%. We also get to watch the temperature plummet 10 degrees or more in less than a half hour, then rise again as the clouds blow past.

Beautiful working day. Temp high was 72F.  Presently 60F with a overnight low predicted to be 46F. Just a early touch of fall.  My kind of weather.

Weather word for today- Brutal

Been hot like hell for the last 2 weeks and getting hotter every day. Oh and humid. Did I mention humid? Gotta love Oklahoma in August.

113 yesterday, down to 106 today according to the prophets.

Supposed to be in the miid to low 90's through Friday - that's my kind of weather in the summer around here - forget those 100+ days - we've actually had a very nice summer (except for how dry it is & the fires  :-\ )

We bake out here in the desert but we seem immune to hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and a lot of the major disasters that happen elsewhere. If we have winter rains and the grasses grow we get in on some fires once in a while.

Dittos on the desert; add having to watch where you step or how careful you are if you go to move a rock when hiking or 4-wheeling. Rattlesnakes are known to live here too.

In the mountains, where we're returning to in a couple hours, I have only bears and lightning to be concerned about. I can scare bears away, but haven't had much luck with the lightning. I've some pictures of another recent near by strike, but not as close as last years. This last one blew the bark of about 20 feet of Ponderosa, plus it blew the top off. Pictures are not too great... maybe try for some better ones and post later.

Hot as all get out today.  I think it was about 107-108.  In the shade.  And the AC at church went out.  Pastor cut it short today (he tends to be a bit long winded, and usually we don't get out of there until around 2 o'clock in the afternoon.)  Today we were out by 1:30.  ;D  Glad we all dressed for a hot day, but there is nothing more disgusting than sweat dripping down your legs and down into your eyes.

Trying to scare lightening is right up there with trying to store electricity in a bucket. It just doesn't work. Those snakes were here first and they buzz insistently when being trespassed upon. They don't scare much either.
HGT I can relate to 107-108 in the shade and no shade. Day after day.

Around 97 here today - we had an impromptu barbecue today wth 2 neighbor families.  Great to get together after not getting burned out.

I took care of Rhonda' garden and she said yesterday I think when she went to water the squash - the deer net was supposed to lift right up so she could water - it didn't.  She looked down and there was a 13 button rattler.  She called her son who dispatched it.  Yesterday I was checking to see if my dog was up by Jeannes and a nice big tarantula crossed the path in front of me.  That time already? hmm

glen,

i am going to assume that you know that tarantula's are harmless. i had one as a pet. if they do bite you it is akin to a bee sting.
unless we recognize who's really in charge, things aren't going to get better.

glenn kangiser

Yes - I had a Mexican red leg.  Walked all over me, although they say you have to be careful as it is not safe for the tarantula if they fall and split their little abdomen.  Life with an exoskeleton has to be a bit rough. d*

The blistering heat continues here in OK. I'm starting work at 6:00 am now to try and beat it a little. But by 11:00am it's already miserable.  d*

I had a friend when I was a kid who had a black tarantula - we'd let it walk on us...  I was kinda nervous at 1st but it never bit any of us.  I hate spiders (except daddy long legs) but tarantulas are kinda cute  :)

Since the spell of hot weather started, we've had an absolute infestation of fiddle back spiders (brown recluses).  I have killed over 15 that I could positively ID, and another few that I killed before turning the light on.  One was in the pajama drawer on the clean pajamas I was about to put on.  One was on the leg of the baby's cradle. Another one DH luckily killed as he rolled over to get out of bed in the morning.  Last night I killed one in our closet on a shelf with my clothes.  They are everywhere!!!

I went to a funeral yesterday for one of my cousins.  It was 109 degrees when we came out of the church.  My truck was about a mile away (she was a much loved person, obviously, as there wasn't a place left to park anywhere near the church.)  The baby was with me and we both got a good tan before we got back to the truck.  We didn't go to the cemetary... who the heck plans graveside services at 2 PM in August in Oklahoma???? Mom said it was 111 at the cemetary when they left.

It's going to be another hot one today.  I know this not because I listened to the forecast, but because at 6 AM, the dog was already hanging out in the swimming pool!  I am just about thawed out from our three years in WI....

Mad Dog

Cool(50*) with clouds shrouding the mountains, and some mist.  Probably "burn" off and get up to about 65* today.  I'll keep this, you guys can have all that heat and humidity.

Funny how Don mentioned bears.  I took the time to do the initial staking for the cabin yesterday, and after that took a walk around the 9 acres.  The horses graze through most of the high grass this time of year, and low and behold I find fresh bear scat.  Not unusual through these parts, along with all the stray dogs, I mean moose. ;D

There are plenty of trees on the property(making for some poor line of sight issues), so I rarely walk around without my 12 ga and some slugs, just in case. ;)

A baumy 75F today. Intermittent showers most of the day.  Tomarrow is about the same.  Felt like about 90 in the loft working with the quartz light to help me see.

80 in the shade, and there isn't any when I'm cutting the wood.  Stuck OSB up on the ceiling joists so I could walk around and survey the new view....Wahoo.

Then a cold shower, I was melting.

Thunderstorms in mountian and deserts.  High humidity here (Inland valley, Riverside county CA)  Suppose to rain for 3 days but not a drop.  Temp near 100*.
