You could possibly make a cool figurehead from one of those logs.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

With all of that snow, did you go figure skating today?  I bet that's a real purty sight!

No, I thought I would slip and fall on my f_igging bottom..... [waiting]

What I would actually like is to make a lookout with a great big log and ladder sticking straight up over the trees so I could see forever...  hmm

maybe something like this... [crz]

Got a couple of shots of my old concrete mixer while I was out in the snow yesterday.

It does still run and work if I care to work hard enough to get it started.  [waiting]

I think it is from sometime in the 1920's

You've got some post card quality pics. there Glenn.  [cool]

Is that mixer engine one of those hit-miss types?  My nephew has restored one to use with an ice cream mixer; pretty neat.  I have a pic. somewhere, but can't find it.

ben2go

Yep.Hit n miss.We got an old fairbanks at the shop.I think it's fairbanks.  ???

glenn kangiser

Thanks, poppy and ben2go.  Yup - hit and miss.

I don't remember the brand the engine is but it is hit and miss.  Note the aluminum parts you can see in the picture just ahead of the flywheel.  I cast exact replicas in aluminum  and installed them in place of the originals.  The originals are in the tool box so that I could use them as patterns for making replacement parts for other collectors.

Here is an add from a few years earlier.  The loader has been cut off of the one I have but you can see it from the pix.

Rainy days and my great room is full of lumber so I guess I need to do something.  Get rid of some before I cut more.

Last night - yesterday afternoon, I started closing the gaps that separate the front porch from the great room.  A bit of air was moving through there.

The biggest gap was only about 2 feet x 6 '6", but was near the ceiling above the windows.  It was one of those things that were annoying and time consuming enough that I just put it off.... I guess 6 years or so is long enough.  Time to get after it a bit more. [waiting]

the engine is but it is hit and miss.

Thanks for that Glen, I've actually being looking for the name of these things since I saw one at a farm show in Wales in the "summer".
How's the throne coming along ?

I have been collecting the hit and miss and other antique machinery since the late 70's.  Not a fanatic but I still get some occasionally.  They call them hit and miss because they only fire when necessary to keep governed speed up.  When the RPMs slow down the governor allows the trip lever to catch again and cause it to fire.  The rest of the time it is just coasting until it gets a load that slows it enough to fire every time, thus the name.

There was an old fellow in England who helped  me find a bit of info on my ATCO power mower, Steve.  It was years ago and I believe ATCO is still in business.  As near as I can tell it is one of the very early ATCO's probably shortly after the first ones around 1925.  It uses a Villiers Motorcycle engine, and I have had it running.  I got it from a furniture company that imports antiques from England.  Charles Pugh I believe it was, owned a foundry.  After his mule died that pulled his mower, he commissioned his men to build the gas engine powered mower.

Here is a pretty good site for hit and miss info.

The throne is poppy's but hopefully he may let me use it if necessary. [crz]

Hey Glenn,

I love those shelves you made! Beautiful! Very rustic! :)

OkieJohn2

Ummmmm Glen, it seems you have become unstuck, or unpinned or whatever, is this the price we have to pay to have Dogtrot and DeerRun in the pantheon of builder projects.
Now a question about the cement mixer, is that hit or miss engine fueled with Jaegermeister???
The problem with foolproof devices is that they fail to take into account the ingenuity of fools

Thanks, BK.  It's just a bit of old lumber I had laying around. :)

Unpinned ... I have been dealing with that all day....  uh hmm wait a minute... that was just a loose belt.... unpinned was nearly 60 years ago.... [waiting]

Ummm... no, I did that myself - figured I'd give one more room to be up there as I have been stuck there a long time... besides, it takes a bit of the pressure off of me to perform and puts it onto Scott A.   I have had a bit of performance anxiety lately... [noidea'

Jagermeister...  Had to look up the specs.... I don't think it is quite strong enough, however some of the old engines would run on kerosene.  I just run them on gasoline most of the time now - and wouldn't you know it -- we are already back to unleaded. d*

I got the weird idea I wanted to put the property and spring to work so when offered the chance to get some calves I did, but the lady who is taking care of them (a neighbor/customer/friend who got them for me)  checks once in a while to see how my fence is doing so I figured I better get cracking.... [waiting]

I completed about 330 feet of it  (straight across in front of the Bush Hog) this morning (started previously) and got a good start on another 240 or so feet today (the left down hill).  Posts and braces are in - wires strung - need to be fastened and stretched.  Probably only about 2500 feet to go and 2000 feet of old fence to repair.  [frus]

The hill is so steep and muddy that the Bush Hog won't go back up it.  I have to continue down to the road below.

Do I really want to be a cowboy?  [noidea'

Hmm - horses have brains... not real big ones for their size, but big enough to make them want to do exactly what I tell them not to.  [waiting]

I think I better stick with things that have motors on them... [crz]

Glenn man, what id you do to tick off Glenn?  You got bumped from a sticky to regular...   You must have done something like say "underground homes are for moles.."   or something like that.

glenn kangiser

hmm Underground Homes are for troglodytes... [waiting]

That Glenn dude sure gets ticked off easily doesn't he?

Nah... I just thought I'd stick a few of the others up there for a bit - Whitlock suggested swapping a few around since there was not a lot of activity in the stickies.

I'll just have to do something once in a while to keep mine near the stickies. d*

Glenn I didn't picture that you had that much fence to build.  Are you using  handsawed or split locust or buying PT post.  This could get expensive. ;D

glenn kangiser

I have a lot of old railroad ties so am using them for the braces and the occasional intermediate post.   I have quite a few of them but either have to dig the hole by hand or use the Bobcat, but most of my land is so steep that likely with all of the rain I will constantly be getting it stuck and maybe not even back up the hill for the winter.

Between the RR tie post then the rest are steel T posts.  Tractor Supply has them for $4.29 plus tax.  I have to buy them a few at a time so I will not realize what they cost.... [waiting]

How far can you space T post when using 48 inch tall welded wire fencing?

Redoverfarm

Ben2go I usually run 10' between for approximately 5 post then use a wooden post or a brace post.

GLENN make sure you get the long barbed staples 2".  They are like telephone poles without the barbs they will work loose.

glenn kangiser

Thanks, John.  I'll try to find the barbed staples....  may have to get them in the valley somewhere.  I'm just getting a good start now so can add them easily.

I agree on the welded wire - that makes a good fence.  I was going ten feet on the barbed wire but decided to go 12 and put a twisty wire in the middle or just do it with barbless wire.  Too much fence for the 10' spacing.

I went down the hill yesterday and worked on the fence for about 2 hours - got another brace in then decided to see if I could eliminate a gate by going up a different way.

Needless to say, I could not get back up the muddy hill with the 4 wheel drive BushHog, so went around the long way and still had to winch myself up about 100 feet by a steep slippery spot.  I wasn't about to walk back.  [ouch]

Anybody knows an hour of winching is better than a half mile walk... [waiting]
