Looking at it in the pix it looks like if stood on the end cut with the hollow end in the air it might make a mighty fine throne also....

Now you've gone and done it Glenn.  I thought I had the seat for the simple composting toilet firgured out, but now I will be measuring that hunk of oak to see if a bucket will fit in the trunk section.  Talk about your junk and the trunk.

On another note...

I got wood.  

Yup, a friend called and said the local sawyer offered to take it away for free but not pay anything for it.  I offered to trade some Bobcat work for it.  The logs were fallen across his lower driveway and were blocking it.  So... I got wood.

Whitlock came over this morning and rousted me out of bed.  He was anxious to get going as I am trading him for some he needs also.  He  helps me -- I help him, we help my other friend and we all come out ahead  - barter is great.



There is another load over there to pick up tomorrow.  It could have been today but my log deck area was such a mess we had to spend a few hours cleaning it out just so we had room to unload.




It's all better now and the logs are safely stacked in a nice deck....

It decided to head down to the next terrace below the mill level ( about 20' elev lower) and attempt to smash my little red trailer... [panic]






These are bug damaged Sugar Pine and the larger ones average 20" to 24" dia and 16'6" long.

Looks like some pretty clear and straight logs.  They didn't even cut them up into unuseable lengths either like so many people do when they fall over a road.  They are so interested in just getting the road open at any cost.  Lucky find.

You got it, John.  I like it when they call me to cut them to the lengths I want.  I don't even mind limbing them as long as the price is right.  I like the limbs cut close to the trunk so the saw carriage doesn't catch on them.  I cut 6 inches over length to be sure crooked ends or checks are not a problem.

He caught these just as they were starting to get bug damage so they are in very good shape.  FULL of pitch - its really sticky in the saw cuts.

The land owner had another usable driveway so these were only an inconvenience to them - no circle drive until I cleared the road.

I was just trying to estimate the length and guessed around 200 bf in each when I guessed that the average was about (18") X 16' .  The trailer length was throwing me off.

Yes - the trailer is ugly but it is twenty feet long on the bed.  It hauls more when it has all of it's tires and wheels - I lost one on the way back  from Whitlock's cabin the other day.  Oh well - didn't need it anyway...

We got two more loads of logs today but I forgot to get pictures before dark.  Whitlock estimates that we got around 8000 board feet when it is cut up.  As soon as the snow stops (coming tonight they say) we will get after the milling.

I put up some shelves in the great room a bit over a week ago but forgot to post pix.  The boards are about 2x12s with a wavy front edge.  



I notched the logs by laying out the elevation of the joint in the boards in the wall behind with a level then dropping down 3/4 inch for the bottom of the shelf, to place the joint directly behind the shelf.  This eliminated the need to cover the shrinkage gaps with battens.

I next layed out level lines on the post with a level and pencil then scribed the thickness of the shelf with a scriber from the level line.  I cut the lines with a reciprocating saw then chipped the waste out with a wood chisel.  

This allowed the shelves to slide straight into the slots from the front, after which they were fastened with screws from the bottom.

I had trim boards slotted into the posts vertically so notched the shelves after scribing them for a tight fit to the wall.  Shelf length varied a bit due to the shape of the logs so I fit each one individually.

Note the fine UL approved wiring hanging on the knot on the left post.....

The rock was actually a part of a geologic conspiracy to keep me from digging farther.



The post on it supports the roof peak 16 feet up and it is fastened to the rock on a steel pin in a hole drilled into the rock.  The floor area around it had to be jack-hammered to get it level enough for the India CBRI Light Duty concrete floor.  For those who haven't seen it - review of the floor here a few pages back   http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=151.msg100949#msg100949

I used the same floor for the area around the rock to make it easily cleaned.  We only have very tiny rock-slides occasionally in the great room - a few chips fall off of the fractured area - but not much.  Sassy or I will give it a coat of gloss Polyurethane soon.  

The wall there above the rock at the 4 1/2 foot level and up will get insulation and wood as it has the front door and porch area on the other side - where the cat oven is, so it gets cold in the winter.

It is kind of like living in a cave with the rock exposed like that....

I went outside after the snow stopped.... brrr but, while taking a few pix, I noticed that the fig tree the birds planted on the roof two years ago had a fig on it, and until it lost it's leaves, I didn't even know.




I hope I never lose my fig leaf...

Those are nice looking logs, back there a page, Glenn. Not too much that big around here. Those that are are mostly in the national forest and out of bounds.
