Shooter's coop... Winner!

Err... 48 X 72 inches.

Don has me annoyed with the speed of his progress, and I am laid up with a bad neck from concrete work.  But I had a itch to build something..

Seeing as how my hens just started laying, I thought I had better get the permanent coop done.  This is mostly scrap wood... so far I am all of $25 into this project and I think I have all the materials.

Inspectors are a pain.  But throw them a little scratch under the table and they will look the other way.



Unfortunately, a little scratch brings more inspectors, checking out the subflooring on the old place.  They have declared it uninhabitable:



Got this far in a few hours, had to knock off for our church annual fiesta!  Going to have 8 boxes on the two wings, and perches in the middle.

Do you have a tray concept for the underside?  Seems the white/green goop will pile up pretty thick as is.

We'll leave it open during three seasons and shovel out the poop.  During the winter I am going to box off the bottom and clean it out once a week or so.  Actually, I'll have a kid clean it out

Frank when I first saw the thread title I thought "my gosh he has really changed his original demensions on his build".  My son has wanted chickens for years.  Been holding off. Got him pigs instead for his 4-H project.  Wish I had went with the chickens. Still can I guess.  Maybe build the coop as the 2nd story to the pig hutch

This might explain the cause of my dog's breath.  His nose is usually green from being in the tomatoes.  I thought he was eating the fruit, but maybe he has been looking for chicken "nuggets" instead.

You should have seen the smiling faces and black teeth when I brought in the load of alpaca doodoo... no boy --- no kisses....

One of the things that we did on our old chicken house that made it much easier to clean was to make one wall of the house hinged so that we could lift the whole thing up (the hinge was at the top) and prop it up with a hoe handle.  Then we could scrape out the bottom of the house floor really easily, wash everything down, and add new bedding.  We put old straw in the floor and the nests, and then the chickens would scratch it to pieces until the next good cleaning.  Of course the straw and the chicken poop went directly onto the compost pile, and it broke down really fast because of the high N of the chicken poop.... it was better than adding fertilizer to the compost pile.  Every time we'd clean out the house, we'd also rake out the coop, level any holes that the chickens had dug (I was always amazed at how deep a hole an aracauna could did looking for a bug or a worm!)  Our chickens were always allowed to free-range during the day and were put in the coop at sundown.

NM Shooter, cute chicks!  Looks like you'll have a nice chicken coop...  HG, wish we could let our chickens free range - we did at 1st, but they kept getting eaten - then we fenced a big yard for them with chicken wire over the top but the raccoons & coyotes kept getting in.  (not to mention bears...)

The Great Chicken Coop Name Game

OK... my neighbor told me that in the custom of chicken coops everywhere, I had to have a name for the coop.  After long and arduous debate in my family, we have settled on a name. 

So here's the deal... closest guess to the name we picked wins two jars of El Pinto Salsa...local place just dined at by visiting candidates McCain and Palin...they liked the salsa so much they left with extra jars for home. 

I'll give you a hint... it has something to do with my alias, town name (Corrales), or my chickens (I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 6 Barred Rocks, 2 Californians, and 2 Buff Orpingtons).

Just FYI... this is what a $280 egg looks like.  Of course that drops to $140 when the second egg appears, so we should have eaten that first one fast.
