Is there any opinion of a particular brand over another? Pricing seems fairly competitive but hate to buy the wrong one and learn after the fact I was a dummy.  ;D d*

Personally I chose a Mitsubishi .  The main reason was that I believe they were the originator of the Mini-Split system.  Although there are several different companies that sell the system and some are cheaper I went with the original.

I agree with the Mitsubishi.  They do tend to me a bit more pricey, but the quality is right up there.  I have heard many complaints with some of the cheaper brands, not so much with these.  I installed my last one and 10 years later still have no problems (just remember to clean the fan periodically or they will vibrate, and if too much dust finds its way into the drain then it drains inside the house).  Any problem I had was from my own negligence.

There are about a bazillion brand names out there. I'd be comfortable with big names I recognize,  Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Fujitsu, ...  Some of these can be had with some very impressive SEER numbers. Good enough to run off grid.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

I'm really impressed with our Mitsubishi Hyper Heat units. Incredibly quiet and efficient; 26 SEER. They also make usable heat down to -13 F. Our house is roughly 1300 square feet, and running the A/C in July added only $20 to our electric bill. This is in hot SC, but in a very well insulated house.

I'm not poor- I'm financially underpowered.
