Frame bracing problem

The question of bracing comes up all the time.  Here is a winter scene from today of an old tobacco barn close to my properties.



Pretty good braces in one direction, but the other way...  :o

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

I drive by hundreds of these around my place.  It is so depressing.   They then just sit and rot.  If they had just a little maintenance over the years the massive amounts of materials and labor put into them would be saved.  Many times the owners became too old to maintain them or they just passed away. Such a waste.

Notice how the Gambrel roof section is still fairly intact and "square".
