I just deleted a new member from Hawaii using a slightly changed version of my name.

He posted a bunch of porn sites which I am currently removing --his IP address of 72.234.50.113 and second one of 72.234.1.236 has been blocked.  I guess I will have to file an abuse report and copy of his posting with his IP also. I have removed approximately 52 postings.

Please notify me if we have any more of this cuteness going on.  Thanks for the heads up, Jonesy.

I called in and sent e-mail to the abuse report address along with copies of his postings with times PST, His IP addresses and a copy of one of his threats to me when I removed him.  He was slightly upset when I blocked him and deleted both of his memberships under changed versions of my name.  He even threatened to do interesting things to me.   :) I hope Hawaii has some good mean cops.

I know a couple of things about computers, eh? :)

Good job, Mr. Administrator, sir.

It  puzzles me why anyone would want to pull that kind of crappola.   There are apparently plenty of venues available to folks who want to "indulge" in smut.  Why try to bring it to places like this?

Anyway, ya done more than I would know how to do in tracking the yutz. Thanks.

You know it always astounds me that some folks think they have the more rights than others. They think the internet is there's to use as they please.

Maybe if someone took a small 3lb sledge and whacked him across his knuckles he would think twice about putting porn on someone else's site.  ;D

Just my 2 cents.....

Unfortunatly, I don't think anything will ever be done to him.  This "gorilla tactic advertising" (as I call it) is just starting to spread and I think you'll see it happen more and more.

The only defense I see against it is an active membership alearting moderators (if they haven't already caught it) to problem posts to look at and investigate and deal with as they deem appropriate.

I was removing him and his postings as he was putting them on, so he posted another one directly to me- even worse than the one he Instant Messaged me with.  I think he was loving the interaction but he didn't have a great sense of humor.  He was not aware that it is nearly impossible to embarrass me even if he did come from Broke B*tt Mountain (persuasion assumed from things he wanted to do to me).

I agree that nothing will probably be done but if they do want to do anything about it the ISP has all the information from me that they need to track the actual computer the person was using, as they can refer to their record of who was on that IP address at that moment.

I'd like to see it happen- probably won't.

Good work!  Wow!  And you can make an overhead bead also?

I'm such a good welder that I once made an overhead bead to seal a leak (factory problem) upside down with my head hanging over the tank (new steel sewer treatment plant tank) just by listening to the sound of the arc.  Actually I make the welds  to a quality sufficient to pass inspection - not always extremely pretty but with field conditions considered, pretty good.

Many of my computer skills were learned Beta testing MSN and fightng problems with Windows 95 and up.  I had one of the first Radio Shack Trash 80's also and programmed my own foundation and slab concrete quantity calculator-- could print out the results on a silver sheet of what looked like toilet paper with their first tiny printer.

Wow, you had the printer?  After getting the remote control cassette recorder for data storage, I couldn't afford the printer! [smiley=lolk.gif]

Glenn:

Thanks for being on top of this. I got an instant message from him as well.

Do you think it would it have helped if we only allowed registered users to post? We can do that but I expect we would have more admin work with forgotten ids and passwords. Also, the bar to getting into the discussion will have been raised. Many will not make the effort to register.

High Tech - Old Tech - my story:

I once programed a Commodore 64 to run solar glazing and thermal mass simulations to predict the right mix of glass and mass for solar houses in different climate zones. That was the high water mark of my computer savvy and it has been downhill ever since.

Now where is that "any" key again?  :)
None of us are as smart as all of us.

Related -- but slightly different.  A friend once called the local free paper shopper throw away newspaper and kindly asked that he be removed from their distribution list.  The paper, polietly said "no" because their delivery drivers were on contract and there was no possible way to have his address removed.

He tried for three or four times eventually talking to the owner who insisted that nothing could be done.

So my friend created an auto dial on his computer and began faxing requests to the company every 5 minutes....over a long 3 day holiday.

Come Tuesday morning, the paper owner called my friend and left a message that "we got your message loud and clear and we will remove you from our distribution list."

Sometimes, it just takes a little persuasion.

Like someone else said, book em Glenn-o

I forgot about the recorder, Billy Bob-- I had that fine piece of machinery too.

John-- you got an Instant Message too-----I'm so jealous. :-/

No need to stop the easy guest postings, John.  I can even run and block the guest IP's so can locate them also.  This guy actually registered as a member 2 times using my name and an underscore once and a period the next time.  It was quite interesting to see him writing at the same time I was removing his postings.  He was a member twice --I removed him twice -he wasn't a happy camper after the first removal. He cussed me out and threatened to do manly things to me after I posted a notice to our members that he was using my name.

The key to the security here is having the IP addresses to block them, ability to remove them as members, and the ability to run their numbers, locate their ISP and file a complaint whether the ISP acts on it or not.

If the ISP doesn't respond soon maybe we can all send them a note at the address I posted -every 5 minutes or so like Fritz mentioned.  I want to see them take some action on this---I'll give them a bit to respond though.

I was almost on dial up last night and may not have logged in- wouldn't I have looked good this morning? :-/

Anyway ---rest assured that I won't be posting any links to porn.
If it does get on here it won't be here long.  Thanks to all who help keep this crap out and back me up.
