Does anyone here have a band saw mill? I have been looking into getting one. Whats the best mill for the money? What options do I need? What size? What brand? Should I go a little bigger than I see an immedate use for?
That way we can cut the lumber for our house right off the property. Our property is completely wooded 36 acres. Its mostly hardwoods from 12" to 16" on average. There are some larger and smaller trees but most are oaks 12-16". The BIGGEST trees I have seen on our land are about 24"-30". There may be enough large pines for one or two large log cabins too. If I were to buy a mill I wonder if I could make a few Dollars with it.

Do you think it would work to cut D shaped logs for our home along with diminsional lumber. We want to use as many resources off the land as possible. We have enough large stones to build a rock foundation maybe even basement. :)

We want to clear about 10 acres before we are done. Would it be worth while to spend the $$$ for a mill if that ten acres is all I ever cut?

  Thanks

Did you talk to Peter Nap, Larry.  I think He, I and desdawg are the sawmill owners here at this time.   Don't know if I missed anyone. ???

I have a Wood Wizard, available direct or through Northern Equipment, desdawg has a Norwood I think and I forget the one Peter has.

$3500 to $4000 for a mill for starters I think.

Mine has an added length and can cut 30" x 20'

Hey Glenn,

Thanks for the link. I wonder how it went for Desdawg. Peter nap has a chainsaw type mill. I saw some of the wood he milled last week.

Still looking around and have info comming from several companys.

Larry don't have one but I wish I did. But then when would I find time to use it.  By the way I hope the tornado in Suffolk wasn't near you or that you didn't have any damage.

Last I heard desdawg hadn't used his but maybe he has by now.

It's about time for me to start mine up again.

Hey Thats pretty cool Glenn. I wonder I I could build one? Probably better to buy. I have seen plans and even places that sell kits but I'm just not sure.

You could build one.  No doubt.  Even I could.

Driver is about a 12 inch pulley with a fairly tight v belt in the groove for grip.
