Now you've done it.  My DW wanted a mantel beam.  I told her i needed one of those neat log mills.  She had to be looking over my shoulder when I looked at your post.  

Great lookig log work though.

If the truth be told, I was using the broad ax because my chainsaw burnt up.  But I will still probably hew some of the timber sides for my cabin.

I'm rather lazy - use the band saw - or will right after I put the new motor on it...

Glen, I hear you on the band saw.  If you were closer, I would help you put the motor on.

I have a small Amish mill lined up to do some band sawing for me, to avoid using the chain saw.

My chainsaw mill works fine but there are a couple of caveats

You need a saw 100 cc or better.

You need to retune the saw so it doesn't run hot

You need to keep a sharp chain on it

You need to open the oil control all the way and have an auxiliary oiler

.....

To make it work easier, you need to have your work on an incline so gravity pulls it rather than you pushing it

You need to center the mill so it balances on the work

I've sawn a couple thousand BF with mine so far.

peter, I only wish I had seen your post about chain saw mills before I invested in a 67cc Echo.  It could do what I need to have done but it burnt up after one tank of gas; Echo repaired it under warranty and it burnt up again after 2 tanks.  It's in their hands again, so it's now either a new saw or my money back.

So likely, I will be transporting some logs to the Amish mill.

I'm using a Dolmar 9010. It's a tad light but I don't push it and make sure it doesn't run rich (That's a killer on any saw) I am heavy on the mix but have it tuned for it and rest it every couple of cuts.

The shop says that Echo will fix my saw a second time under warranty.  We'll see how it works the third time.
