I just saw on TV "Bog Cabin".   They show a metal roof.   It had a whole lot of layers of insulation, rigid board and I don't know what else.  (No Tivo here).

I was thinking about a metal roof.  But cannot get to 3/12 pitch.  Maybe  2.5 / 12 pitch.

I'm unclear on this.   Who has used the metal roof and how did you do it?

Redoverfarm

John I didn't get a full 3/12 on my porch either.  I got about what you have.  Didn't have any problems.  I think the main concern with any lower pitch is snow build up, weight and ice daming.  I really in all honesty don't think you will have a problem in the area that you live.  Now Alaska maybe. ;D Mine is a done deal and there is no way to change it other than coming off my primary roof onto the porch roof and that really wasn't an option for me.  Last winter the snow came off of it almost as fast as the 10/12 roof.

I don't recall if you were going to put sheeting and then the metal or just purlins. If it was sheeted then a layer of Ice Guard would help you get piece of mind .

Did you get the site on the vent you was looking for that I forwarded to you.

We did a metal roof on our FirstDay.  It was from inside to outside: 1 by sheathing, Tyvek, 3" rigid foam insulation, 1 by strapping, and metal roof.

Redover,
Got that link,  it says minimum 3/12 pitch roof.

Daddymen,
what is the strapping?

Redoverfarm

John I sent you a PM message.

Daddymem

Strapping is thin wood (1x3? pine in our case) the roof is supported by and screws into like you do with shingles:

Probably regional terminology.

Done on a roof that would be called "skip sheathing" out here in the PNW. Generally spaced with a 8 penny nail about 2 1/2" 1x4 or 1x6 mainly.

Do they still 'strap' the ceilings back east before the drywalls hung?

We used to back in the 70's when I lived in RI. I think that was some hold over from the plaster days  ??? What we should have done , but never did , would have been to pull a string line and shim down all the strapping so the ceiling was a flat plain , we didn't we just nailed it tight to the underside of the joist . It would tend to flatten out the ceiling some what by doing that , but shimming would have gotten it flatter.
When in doubt , build it stout with something you know about .

Daddymem

Not sure the tendencies are for that here now PEG, no drywall in our house.
