Timber wrestling

I took today off to get some logs. I found a place where the power company was cutting an easement in a heavily timbered area. Lots of pine in the 10 to 17" range and some Oak the same size.

I bucked them, winched them out and debarked them and loaded them.

The good news is I can still lift a 300 lb log.
The bad news is....I'm a wreck tonight!

Backs out and both knees blown!

I feel VERY OLD!

I was looking to see if I missed something - I didn't find out if you got the sawmill yet, Peter. Lusting after logs is a good sign though.

I watched Mexicans in Mexico rolling logs up planks onto a flatbed truck.

My guess is there will be a sawmill one way or the other. There are no free lunches or free lumber. You will pay for it one way or the other.

A Hud-Son.

It's pretty much the Norwood, no trailer and about 500,00 cheaper. There.s a local dealer so parts and service are closer.

One thing that everyone has told me about every mill...is to change the guide bearings. The Chinese bearings will last a day to a month but...they will fail. The dealer is changing them out for me for free.

Feeling fine today Sassy...Thanks for thinking of me. I had my back brace on so I didn't pop my disc and my knees always go out after a workout. Next day they usually come back.
I can live with that...now if I can ever get my glucose regulated, I'll dance a jig.

try cinnamon - turmeric also - they both help to regulate the glucose... I don't have a problem with it, but I put cinnamon in my coffee & also on whole grain/flaxseed raisin bran cereal (from Trader Joe's - it's great)

Peter I just got back into the log thing again. I thought the most was behind me. I had to wrestle a 10-12"X10' locust post to the inside of the cabin to use to support a landing and stairs to the loft. I wish I had some way to measure the weight as it was a bear. Then trying to upend it to the verticle position, plumb, cut square. That's as far as I got because I knew that there was no way to put it upright by myself and get it braced. Just have to grab someone else to give a hand with it. Last night reminded me why I had back surgery 13 years ago.

I bought the debarking attachment for my chainsaw from Hudson. They sell on e-bay.
Chinee bearings ony last one day? I hadn't heard that before.

Heard that Red. I'm glad the place is so far out in the boonies because if anyone had seem me put the poles in, they'd had a heart attack laughing. I have the poles scarfed to the salt treated foundation posts by drilling a hole through the sub-floor and end of the posts and putting in a 1-1/2" hickory pin. It sticks up 6" above the subfloor.

The poles that range from 8' to 16', have a center hole drilled in their end and fit over the hickory pin.

I'd law everything out, butt the pole to the pin, walk it up like a ladder and bear hug it. Then the tricky part started. I had to balance it, pick it up 6", center it on the pin and lower it. Still supporting the pole I had to reach down, grab a 2x4 brace and hammer and nail it in...then another. Then I had to plumb it and back off to pail the brace ends to the sub floor.
That had to be a sight!....16 of them $:-\$

Des, the problem bearings are just the ones that the band runs on.

I did temp nail 2X6 in a "U" shape on the subfloor so when I was trying to push upright the bottom wouldn't kick out. But they are so awkward and heavy. I thought about pinning them to sit on but with the irregular demensions I wouldn't be able to get them in the right position. Maybe Sunday with the boy's help(to hold steady) I can get it up and braced . Then I will have to mortise a 4"X8" pocket to allow the floor joist to sit in and then I am good to go on the loft flooring. Well maybe not quite. I still have to cut a chase in ceiling beam of the bedroom for electric line.
