Would anyone have an idea about what would be a fair price  (other than free :)) for 1x8 (12ft.) T&G #1 grade?
We've just been quoted a price from an individual but not sure if it's a good price or we're being scalped.

I can't even remember what I paid for that (four straight sides) piece of $#&&+! I got at the lumberyard the other day.

The local mill here - a small one gets 2.00 per board foot for 1x6 nicely planed - decent quality t&g Pine flooring , so a 12ft 1x8 would be $16.00 from him.

No one said it was fair --- but he did have to take it 75 miles and back to the mill that t&g'd and planed it.

What species wood ?? 1 x10 Idaho white pine , no T&G is  .90 cents a linal foot (L/F).  I just checked that price last week up here in Washington.

Thanks everyone for the quick response! :)

It's white pine  ..... $8.50 a board.

The guy bought it for his walls but changed his mind about the project and decided to do something different.

Would this work for flooring or do better as a wall project?

Pine has been used for floors for hundreds of years.  I am currently putting pine in a basement of a historic building -- a no rush fill in job.  The ground level floor is pine and has been in use since 1866.  Years of use gives it great character.

My cousin builds mid-end homes on the cape and uses T&G pine in them.  The guy he face nails the boards and countersinks the nails.  Then he comes back and breaks off dowels in the holes flush to the boards.  Some stain and poly and that's it, they look great.

I'm using the 1 x 8 t/g pine on my walls. Got three up. started #4. I'm staining them with minwax, red oak color, and I LOVE IT !!  Really look rustic and nice. I've been paying right at 6 bucks each for an 8 foot board....sometimes they are on sale for 4.99, but never seen them cheaper than that before.

jb,

How long are the 1x8's @ $4.99?

thanks!

Something to concider here is where all talking about pine , mostly white pine , but there are many type's of even white pine .

Where all also  batteing around L/F  Linal foot ) pricing along with B/F(board foot) and price per board. This creates some confusion as to apples to oranges price.

As far as pine goes it is soft so if scratched floors from apet or shoes is going to be a issue you may want to look at Southern Yellow pine , it was used for flooring for years , most older 1900 and earlier would of had SYP floors in almost all regions EXCEPT New England , floors there would have been from local  Eastern White Pine.

That being said in April when my wife is visisting down in Az. we / I are  putting down some Idaho White Pine 1 x10 (net 11/16"x9" after milling / sanding  )in the master bedroom .

I like Pine but it does have it's short comings.

I used 2x8 T & G for my loft flooring in my cabin.  The true thickness was 1 3/4".  It was of very high quality (very, very few knots).  I paid $1.25 per lineal foot.  So an 8 foot piece was $10.00.  It was cut and planed by the local Amish lumber mill.  I know that is not what you were using it for, but I figured it would give you a cost comparison.

John was that KD or AD Lumber?? That would be yet another thing with small mills , you'll geta lot more shrinking with AD lumber (Air Dryed) unless of course it has been dried for about  1 year per inch of thickness.

And some boat builders and furinture makers prefer AD lumber for reasons to vast , varied to mention.

The ones I buy are 8 feet. Actually, they are in the Menards ad today...as follows...
1x8 @6 ft--3.89

jb52761

oops...hit post at wrong time.....the 8 ft ones on sale today for 5.48......the 10 feet are 6.59......12 feet at 8.24...

peg_688

That puts them at .97 , $1.01, and .96 cents a B/F.  They  must have more demand for the 10' ones ;)

Amanda_931

Or bought them later.

1-by would be iffy for an unsupported floor.  Especially if it's got lots of flaws and knots and was grown too quickly, not to mention cut too soon.

John_M

PEG,

The lumber was kiln dried.  Very happy with the quality!

Used the Menard's 1 x 8 T&G, backwards for interior wall in my log cabin, almost the same size as the 8" milled "D" logs. Unless they are butted together can't tell the difference.
Also built kitchen cabinets out of them (front out)as well as bathroom sink base.

They blend in very well.
