thinking about building a garage, and was wondering what the best method for constructing a shed roof is.  The Garage is 28 ft wide by 48 ft.  I had thought of using a carrier beam down the centre and then using 2 x 8's or 2 x 10's as rafters.  Any Suggestions on the best way to create this roof,,,,ideally it would be nice with just clear span.  The north wall is 10ft tall and the front wall is 14ft. tall   I want a shed roof because of the strong winds from the north west, and i prefer the look.

shed roof trusses would give you the span needed.
light and strong.
if you were going to use dimentional lumber for the roof rafters, you would need a center support and more than likely 2x12s on 12 to 16" centers for roof loads.

Maybe something along these lines.

What pitch are you shooting for?  Some roofing materials do not work well with less than 3/12 pitch.

i was thinking my back wall would be 10 ft and then my front wall would be 14 ft and the width of the building being 28 ft,,,so that would be about a 3/12 i think,,,,...

Well if your run is 28 feet and you will only be dropping 48" in that distance I think it would probably only be about 1.7/12 if my head is screwed on right.   ???  For each foot in your run you are only dropping 1.7" X 28 = 47.6"  Something you might consider if you are ordering trusses to get that 3/12 pitch you will need one side at least 84" higher than the other.

Kris

your right about the pitch,,just looked it up with a calculator....well,,,,will think about it and maybe change my design a little,,,,,nice thing that sketchup program....
