I have been lurking on the site for a couple of months now, tons of info and inspiration here.
I have recently accquired about 25- 4'x8' sheets of 1" particle board (not OSB) the stuff that looks like sawdust mixed with glue..
I know this stuff cannot be used anywhere near moisture. my question is what would be a good use for it when building a small house??
Thanks All

That sounds like Medium density fiberboard. We used to apply formica to it to be used as cabinets or end tables.
My teenage boys love it for building speaker boxes.

We have folks that use MDF in their teardrops. The trick is to completely seal it from the elements.

For the purposes of a tiny house I would imaging that means painting it on both sides and sealing the edges too.

Your thoughts?

Hi DSKentfield,

Yep it's a small world. I didn't know you were from Traverse City; since you only ever posted 1 message on the T&TTT forum, and didn't put your location in your profile. But yes, I'm from Lake Orion, MI; approx 30 miles north of Detroit. Of course I'd rather be 200 miles north of Detroit in the Oscoda, MI area, with a piece of land where I could build a tiny little house.

So what brings you here? How tiny a house are you thinking about?

Ya, I'am more of a lurker soaking up everyones knowledge and I have found that in most cases the search button can yield mountains of info. I have a ton of ideas for a tiny house, same as my tear, I tend to overthink things LOL.. Anyway I have 10 acres at the end of a private drive about 8 miles west of TC ( very secluded) it use to be a saw mill and there is a ton of gray barn wood, beams Etc, Etc, I   thought I could shell something in with just what I have laying around.. Also I just bought a small lot on the edge of town (Ramsay) up in the U.P. a real nice town of about 300 with the black river running through the middle, almost to WI. hellova long drive and if I dont end up selling that lot might want to build something up there, I like the builders cottage and love these 2

Yea, I really like that backyard cottage... 350 sq ft. You could keep that warm in Northern Wisconson or Northern Michigan for a song! And it has quite a bit more room than this one... This is a tiny Love shack that was posted on this web site, but I redid it so my mom could see it...

Oooh, I do love that Coho.  If I ever win the lottery, I will have a veritable city of tiny houses, cos I can't decide which one I like best.

I mean, how can you not love this:

And from one newbie to another, welcome.   :D

No kidding.   ;)  Luckily, I'm a grownup and know the difference between "want" and "get."  But his designs are soooo purty.  *sigh*

Could be fun, if I win the lottery, to buy up some of the land that's open for development here in Sharon and build a neighborhood of Ross Chapin cottages.

Daddymem,
I know the Chapmen plans cost a bit, is that what you mean in saying you need to win the lotto?
Or is it because the layout would cost much more to construct IE. dormers, gingerbread, skylights etc. ??
Thanks Scott

Daddymem

The actual houses pictured are crazy expensive.  You'd have to win the lotto to buy one of his houses.  In general I think building his house would cost more due to materials chosen, jogs in his floorplans, etc. how much more is beyond me.

With some imagination any of the Little House plans could be made jsut as appealing on the inside.  I'm not a designer but like to dabble and get most, if not all, of my ideas from pictures or TV or other houses.  In design, I don't think there are any "new" ideas, just new interpretations of old ideas.

I agree, Judy.  The appeal of the houses is not in the box itself, but in the gingerbread and landscaping, after you have the basic shape.

Beams, lofts, exposed wood all add to it also.  I guess it would have to include anything you do to keep it from looking like a shoe box.

You could build some cabinets out of the MDF, or sell it to Mike for more router tables ;)  Speaking of such things, you could build good jigs for the shop out of the stuff.  Crosscutting table saw beds, table router, drill press auxillary table, the list goes on, but I won't.
