woodstove pipes outside... how high to vent??
« on: April 19, 2010, 01:09:10 PM »
do you have to go up above the roof line peak with a wood stove pipe / vent?   I was looking at the pics of this cabin:  http://www.countryplans.com/nash.html and they just go out the side and up about 6-8 feet ... and I wonder if that's alright to do.  Anyone know the rules/regs??

From the top of the flue you should be able to measure sideways in any direction 10'. But it doesn't have to be above the peak of the roof. The one you posted a link to is too short.

In WA is't 2 feet above everything within 10 feet or 3 feet above the peak.

If possible I would try to get it at least 2' above the ridge peak of the roof.  Sometimes depending on the wind currents, location of the house in relation to nearby obstructions can contribute to down drafts or it's ability to draw correctly if it is sheltered to one side of the roof.  Another consideration is maintenance.  If you have it near the edge and to meet the guidelines on a rather steep pitch roof it is hard to clean it.

That picture may be a pellet stove, which can vent out the side of a cabin.
