I recently ordered copies of my birth certificate. I understand I need that to register for medical attention at the VA hospitals should I ever need it. I also ordered a copy of my DD 214 discharge papers from way back when in 1970. Someone told me that in order to apply for SS when I turn 62 I will need copies of my marriage licenses and divorce decrees. I have two of each out there somewhere. Tracking them down could be tricky after quite a few years. I guess proving who you are and where you have been is important in some circles. I thought Big Brother knew all about us. Someone said there is a litle guy in my cellphone. He should know everything if I could just ask him. I guess the system isn't perfected yet and I still have to fill in some blanks.
I have done so much with so little for so long that today I can do almost anything with absolutely nothing.

I reciently set up an appointment with the SS department.  That took 25 minutes on hold and 10 minutes with an agent,

I then thought about the online thing and signed up that way.  A couple of days later I got a notice from the local bracnh to confirm my appointment.  i called to cancel and was told it cancelled automatically when i signed up.  (that was a shock,  A government agency with efficiency?? ???) then I wondered why it did not cancel my appintment notification.. d* That's better now That is the government I know.

I refuse to fly on public transportation until the Nazis are out of there.  They have not caught one terrorist.  This is about control of the public by the Fednazis.  Let the frikking Feds bankrupt the airlines.  I don't give a rats s.

The airlines won't be getting any of my money either. My daughter was refused boarding a flight a couple of years ago because she forgot her ID.

My son was pulled in for special interrogation coming back from Mexico? I think.

We are prisoners here by our own refusal to be humiliated in the name of the fake war on terror -- terror created and likely staged originally by a false flag operation to scare the citizens of the US into submission to and acceptance of a cause they would refuse to participate in,  if they really cared enough to find the facts out about or were allowed access to the evidence of what the criminals in charge are doing.

Gandalf, did you have to track your marriage history to the SS Administration. Needless to say if it is not necessary I don't want to do it.
Actually I am pretty happy with both feet on the ground. I have never been big on flying. I have taken a few hops across some jungle I didn't want to walk through though. I used to prefer driving until the pump got rigged for so much money.

desdawg, go online and you can gp thru the questions they ask. If you don't finalize the info at the end everything sinply stops right there.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

hi des,
i am going to be 62 in dec. this year and am applying for S.S. if you take it at 62 it is at a reduced amount but i feel if i don't take it now it may not be there at 65. one should already have dd214 and b.c. and passport. my monthly amount will help alot. i am also a disabled vet from nam. make sure you all apply for anything you might qualify for. i know some people might feel that it is not helping our country if everyone is on the dole but i am telling you all now that it is too late for that and get what you can, while you can and hunker down. believe me, you aint seen nothin' yet. times are going to get real bad!

Flying always scared the bejeezus out of me...

the older I get the more I try to get to a place where I can go to the country retreat and never have to leave...That is my goal... The need to travel or use planes will be moot.

I refuse to give the government extra monies...Less travel means less tax for them on fuel.

Find a spot in this great country you love and stay there is my motto

I am still over a year away from the 62 mark. I thought it wouldn't hurt to get ready now. I haven't had health insurance for years so knowing I paid my premium with the VA years ago thought I would go that route should I need something as I grow older. SS get's paid into ongoing so I may as well take advantage when I become eligible. I never fit the corporate mold or did all of the "right" things by those standards so what I have going forward is what I have. I can divest myself of some of my accumulation a piece at a time and maybe do a little more trading when opportunity knocks. My crystal ball is in the shop so it is one day at a time.
Peter I agree, flying is for the birds. I think with high fuel prices there is a pent up demand for the vacations people didn't take earlier this year. as things loosen up some of that "discretionary spending" will come back. I have a brother who works with rental cars and he says they are booked well in advance right now.

The sad thing is that the price of oil is going to come down some....It already has started to come back to earth a little.

And when Oil is only $100 a barrel ::) and gas is between $2.50 and $3.00 a gallon...Most americans will think the good old days have returned and they will start driving like mad again in big bulky fuel guzzling vehicles.

Oh a few here and there will have changed the way they drive and use fuel and we will see a few more hybrids and a few more compact cars...But once the price of gas drops under $3.00 a gallon the panic button will get depressed for most americans and life will resume as it was. And this country will still be vulnerable to the oil cartels whims for ever increasing profits

benevolence,
that's pretty much how i look at it. i just want to have a good fishing spot when i finally find my little eden.

Fishing is good ;D

Somewhere to grow all my own food is better...I am not much for hunting...A place to put my kayak in the river to go for a couple day trip would be amazing for me..

no matter how often we use the kayaks, it is not enough...

apaknad

definitely need a garden. i don't kayak, my knees won't handle it but a nice small boat w/ gas engine and i'm happy.

Every journey begins with a single step. I think conservation measures will continue to be explored and there will be some meaningful longer term solutions developed as a result of our recent experience. People will loosen up a little right now since they can but the memory will remain. People who own the guzzlers won't be able to afford to make a transition overnight.
