In addition to beef and venison, I freeze turkey.
This week and next, every year, several stores have turkeys for .37 Lb.

I bought 6 20+ pounders today and will buy another 6 tomorrow after rearranging the freezer.
At .37 Lb, it's the least expensive meat we buy.
These here is God's finest scupturings! And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here!

Wish I had your freezer space Peter.  We have been eating like crazy to empty the 1-1/2 freezers we have in preparation for a beef in January and a couple deer in the next few weeks.  As much as I hate too I better start looking for a used/new freezer. d*

It is a a catch22 situation John.
I would love to have more so I could literally have all the meat we needed for a solid year.
I still have issues with freezer burn, even with the beef that comes from the butcher. If I could cure that, I'd probably add another small freezer outside in the shed.

Peter if you could use those vaccume package it would extend the life of the meat and eliminate the freezer burn.  Or better yet can your meat.  I wish I could say the same about canning but the DW doesn't can. Mine generally doesn't stay around long enough to get burnt.   ;D

I had debated that if I did get another one I might put it in the garage.  They say that is not a good idea because of the cold.  Sounds funny to me also but it does affect them. Some do not work well in extreme cold.  Sort of like a refrigerator in an unheated room.  They do make frigs to work in extreme cold. Not sure about freezers

Most home fridges and freezers are made to be used in a heated room. It is possible to get units that work in cold rooms but they do cost more. The temperature range for use is usually well hidden in the specs if it can be found at all. The refrigeration cycle doesn't work right; sometimes it will work but at less afficiency and so actually can cost as much or more to operate as if it were in a warmer room.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

Sounds strange until I thought about it. I guess it would work better in a warm room ???

I have a very good (expensive) vacume sealer John. Every now and then it leaks. The company admitted bags are bad on occasion.

If the room is too cool, the refrigerant will not vaporize properly in the evaporator core.

Our cheapest was .49 /lb.  We got one 23lb 4 oz bird for later smoking.
We have both a chest freezer and a garage adult beverage fridge.  The chest freezer has worked fine for the 20 years we have had it in the unheated garage.
The fridge works perfect.  Cold in summer and keeps them from freezing in the winter.  It is however a 1956 Maytag.  Nothing pretty, but it works SO well that we won't get rid of it until it dies.  I think the issue is the new refrigerants they use aren't efficient at colder temperatures.  And an unheated garage here in Minnesota can get a bit chilly...
A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work any day, but building something with your own hands beats anything.
