One thing Sassy request with alternative flooring is something that is easy to keep clean.  That is sometimes a bit hard to do.

Yes Glenn, I think it would look good but haven't seen it anywhere.
The end grain would last forever. After I saw the concrete that you used around your pool area I started thinking this might work with a cord wood floor outside.

End grain flooring was used for decades in older warehouse construction. It is very hard and durable. These were square blocks of 4x4 or 6x6 fine grained wood such as Doug Fir. I'm not sure how they were set. Using cord wood (rounds) would be quite different since you would have almost as much filler exposed as wood. There would also be differential shrinkage, wear and sealing issues to contend with.

Hmmm... Douglas Fir 4x4 nd 4x6 are commonplace items around here, even in the big box stores.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

Great resource links.

Thanks, Nelselgne  :D

Yeah, that's really cool... I wonder if wood tiles like that could be installed directly on the ground in an alternative natural house type situation.. Vapor barrier and a layer of compacted fine limestone for a subfloor, or something like that?

Could be a possibility.  Let us know how it turns out. :)

Lol... You may have to wait awhile. :) Perhaps we'll try a counter top or something..

Really beautiful!  Wouldn't mind having some floors like that.  So they're very sturdy, hard floors?  Probably a lot of work unless you paid the big bucks to have them installed for you - the pix on the Studebaker site were really pretty...   8)
