Often, our ignorance is not as great as our reluctance to act on what we know.

OlJarhead

Nah just some train ops ;)  Probably a cav unit off to play in the sand (proving grounds not Mid East) somewhere....or in the woods.

We often used trains to transport equipment to various places rather then drive over the road (Like Fort Hood to Fort Polk for training).

As a career railroader of 35 plus years and just this month retired.  Military moments are hardly a sign of going to war.  Mostly a sign of moving equipment to Fort Hood from Fort Lewis.  Or Fort Hood to the desert training centers in southern California.  The national guards from each state some times even will load and move lots and lot of equipment.  South of Boise there is a large NG training range.  They sort of recently even ran some rail out that way from what I hear.  (Off my usual run.)

Indeed certain places seem to attract a lot of military trains.  One that comes to mind quickly is Salt Lake City - Ogdan area and down around Barstow.  On this corridor here we see very few major military movements when we do it is often times Navy movements of special cars.  Once upon a time they ran the infamous white trains through here.  Nuc war heads for Bangor Sub Base in Washington.  Those turned very ugly when protesters were blocking the railroad just out side of Portland and one person was ran over and killed of course.  I think that was in the mid 1980's if I remember right.

That was about 100 tanks and probably more APC's plus maybe 15 -20 huge tankers

training ?

Look for a new tax. That's the first sign of war! >:(
These here is God's finest scupturings! And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here!

If they were about to be used in war they would be tan.  We all know where they would be going.

I saw a TON of Bradley Fighting vehicles but didn't catch the tanks -- maybe I should have watched to the end?

You might have called the Bradly a Tank though, or an APC....it's a cross between the two really...25mm chain gun plus Coax and pintle mount and towII system...it's an 'ok' rig but too slow (45mph) and likes to sink....whereas the LAV is far superior IMHO as it will truck right along at 70+mph, floats like a dream and has the same firepower....only drawback perhaps is that the LAV (in the 80's anyway) could only carry 6 Marine scouts whereas the Bradly can carry twice that.

OlJarhead

Yep all Bradly's.  Didn't see any M1A's (Tanks)

Also some Fuel trucks but this looks like all Bradly fighting vehicles to me.

For those interested this is the LAV25.

I was with LAV's from 1986 to 1991 in the USMC -- later they were nicknamed (by the bad guys) "The Great Destroyers".....they didn't much like LAV's ;)

OK I love these pictures :)

One of our rigs had a big 'WAR PIG' painted on it....that's where the 'War Pigs' originally came from that's mentioned here ;)

Ya, I was there :D

So you agree it was a TON of Bradleys

and not in tan paint

just seems to be a lot of stuff being moved

And then there are our 'friends' at the CFR

Actually I was kind of surprised at the number of them.  Don't get me wrong, I've seen tons and tons of military vehicles ;) but that is more then I think a typical cav unit has.

Yep pretty much just like that.  Most trains are run as unit trains of 80 to 100 cars and on up depending to the specific Service Units operation plan.    Further there are very strict rules if those trains or cars are to be left unattended.  Sorry man those movements on the rail everyday.  Also when they go to the desert they are already pained like Sparks say.  Even those that move down to the Mojave are all painted for that.  These look more painted for some where else.

As far a training yes.  They train in the deserts,  they train for forests, even up in Alaksa in arctic warfare as well.  And they often time bring there own toys to the play ground.

We moved a couple three trains through here right after Desert Storm.  Mostly artillery coming home.  One I remember exceptionally well.  We slow rolled by one because of bad signals.  The barrels had some graffiti on them as did the the other parts of the weapons.  We got the biggest kick out of some of the titles painted on them.  You could tell who ever they belonged to did some real ass whippin'.

Look what I found on Youtube....   :) :)

We begin with Canadian military vehicles moving by train to invade California...

Ooops. Not an invasion.... training mission. Ft Irwin, CA
Then later heading back home. Apparently there could have been as many as six train loads of equipment being moved for the same exercises. Who would have ever thought?

Note these are not all recent; they go back over months to a year or more...

Canada... 30 mixed freight cars and 45 military equipment flatcars.

I better stop... I had 6 more though and never even looked very hard...
Reading the Youtube comments it was apparent that many people mistook the Bradly FV for a tank.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

My brother was a lifer in Uncle Sams Army.  He managed to hit everything form armor, to special forces, to army aviation before he retired.  They were on a training mission up in Canada somewhere in Alberta I never heard of.  They woke up one morning and the Canadians had all bugged up in the middle of the night.  They could not study war no more.  They had to go fight forest fires.  Left Uncle Sam behind.   :D

Well the mystery train is resolved.  It was an intrastate movement.  It ran from Oxnard to the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, Ca. with the symbol of SOXHR-17.  Which simply means Special or type of train would be S.  OX would be Oxnard - HR would be Herlong - 17 is the date of origin.  Some times that is a very loose factoid.  They will run a day or two a head some times or behind and keep the dated they were to run.  So Country of Southern Calf. declared war on the State of Northern Calf.   ;)
