Just got 4 acres with my wife in West Virginia. We are building a 12X16 cabin with a loft.

#1
The lot is all wooded. It is going to be a ton of work to get a driveway in.

We purchased the property in Dec 2012. As soon as the snow melted we started working on the driveway.

View from where the cabin will be.

Big milestone was being able to drive the truck onto the lot.

Getting ready to pour the footers.

This opening is where the cabin is going to go. Looking back now I wish I had taken out a few more trees.

We quickly found that drilling a 40" deep hole is WV cannot be done with a big drill... you have to do it by hand. Too many rocks.

Helps to have some goof friends.

About 40" deep with 6" of gravel.

Ran a small concrete mixer off my 750watt inverter hooked to my car. Worked like a champ.

Done! Does not look like much... but that was a ton of work.

Time for some structure!

6x6 Posts. 4X12 Girders.

2x8 Floor Joists

p2536142

3/4" T&G OSB Flooring. Painted both sides.

Spring is here!

So it my gravel for the driveway.

Big day! First wall going up.

House Wrap Time.

The cube!

Siding going on. T1-11. Good Stuff.

p2536142

Look at all the room... haha its tiny.

Loft Beams: 2x6

Rain sucks.

p2536142

Temp Roof.

Siding Color. Ask a man... its blue... ask a woman... its like polar bear.

Ridge beam day.

Nice view from the bedroom window.

2X12 ridge beam.

p2536142

Took a little time to figure out how to measure the rafters... each one it like a snow flake... 100% different from the last. Custom haha

Sheeting going up.

Good size loft. There will be a queen size bed up here.

p2536142

Don't build a roof this steep... it is almost impossible to shingle.

p2536142

Deck day.

We knocked it out in three hours. From footers to decking.

Found a use for all those rocks.

View from the deck is nice.

Pond near the cabin.

Hi John,

It is heaven! haha It is near a little town called Berkeley Springs WV. The town has everything you could want, but we are far enough from it that you hear, nothing!

Know it well.  Used to work Morgan County years ago when I was living at Charles Town.

Where in Almost Heaven is your build?

... how many folks picked up on that right off ???   :)
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

Nice little cabin [cool]  I am not to far away, building near Monterey VA.  I am with you on the 2 man auger, we have a ton of rock too.  I built a shed last year and put it on 4X4 piers.  My dad and I tried the auger and gave up on the first hole.  9 holes by hand, glad that is over and sure you are too.  Keep up the good work!
