Keep getting rained out of work on the house, but been thinking about the pier blocks we noted on our approved plans.  We show 12 x 8 x 12 pier blocks, but I am wondering if I would get more strength or load carrrying ability with a 12 x 8 x 16 masonry block.  The larger block give more cubic ft. of area to fill with concrete, but I'm not sure if the actual pier block is more densely made, making it stronger.  Anyone have any experience, knowledge or expertise with these two types of blocks?  County is OK with either.  This is a 16x24 with loft.

thanks to all,

frazoo if it were mine I think I would opt for flue blocks.  They are heavier and have a sizeable opening in the center to fill with concrete and rebar.  I believe they are normally 16" square (actualluy 15 & 5/8") X 8" (Actually 7&5/8").  If you pour footings and allow 2-3 pieces of rebar to protrude from your footing then you can tie additional length of rebar to them to the desired heigth of your pier.

Well, pricing won out in the end  ::)
Thanks for the input Redoverfarm.  The 12" pier blocks cost 37 cents more each than the 12x16 and the flue blocks were REALLY high.  But you are right, they are much heavier than the others and if I weren't pinching pennies it would be a better choice.  Good weather today, but starting to get very cool here, hope to get more laid tomorrow.  Should have pics later this weekend in my thread.
