Im wondoring when you install insulation in the ceiling, do you lay it past the top plate into the soffit area, or do you just lay it to the inside edge of the top plates?

Actually you lay it to the edge of the top plate and install a cardboard 'baffle' that helps keep the air gap open (assuming it's a ventilated roof) for the eve vents.  Codes usually require this.  The idea is to keep the insulation from blocking the eve vents and preventing the air from flowing OVER the insulation and up to the roof vents.

hmmm its a simply 12x12 extension with 2 soffit vents, 1 on each side, and on the gabled end, 2 little cents for airflow.

I have never heard of this baffle before, do you have any pictures by chance? I was planning on going out this weekend and just sticking the insulation between the trusses and leaving it like that.

This one is different then what I've used....not sure about your situation but I've got a 12x12 roof and am venting everything but the gables (the outriggers will be in the way of air flow).

and would you put these only in the spaces with vents, in my case, 2 vents, so 2 of these total?

Normally you need 12 sq in of soffit vent for 150 sq feet of roof area.  If it were mine I would use the raft-r-mates in each bay of the rafters.  For one reason to allow airflow from the soffit area to the ridge area and reduce the heat in those bays to extend your shingle life.

The pink styrofoam in between the rafters in this picture is what I wa referring to.

Those are more like the cardboard style I've used (just couldn't find a good link) and I'd prefer the Styrofoam ones myself....I ought to go back and look in my attic and get a pic of the cardboard.

Anyway, I like the corning ones you've shown here and might use those instead! :D

Ok i did my soffit a bit different then most people do, i didnt level it, i mounted stained fencee boards to the underside of the truss ends.
It looks sharp, its the same color as the siding, but i dont have a photo here.

In that photo, I added 2 vents total, 1 on each side of the extension, midways down each side in the soffit. They are the size of a heat register cover.

I was going to add 2 small 2 inch radius circular vents on the gabled end of the extension.

Also there is no actual vents in the roof itself.
