If used correctly, I support this.  I received some swats in school that I didn't deserve.  I received some that I did.  I think some teachers might do this as sport if not supervised during the application of the discipline.

I volunteer a lot in our schools, and I see absolutely terrible behavior and lack of respect.  Teachers and admins are hosed, because most of the parents of these kids that need discipline the most, just don't care.  Too bad we can't give swats to the parents too.

I support open handed swats.  No paddles though; too much potential for lumber that can cause real injury.  When I was in the 9th grade, I saw a kid get swatted with a 2x4 with holes drilled in it; teacher missed and hit him in the lower back.  Kid went down screaming.

I am not optimistic that it will catch on though.  Too many lawyers.

I made the school send my son to me to decide if he needed to be beat or not.  He didn't - they were stupid..... They only wanted to dish out an equal amount of punishment without considering the facts.

When I went to school my dad would not allow me to fight - turn the other cheek -- get both of the smashed in... although he was willing to do it daily for no legitimate reason.  Walking between him and the TV while he was watching wrestling or similar does not qualify as a legitimate excuse for a beating or getting drug across the floor by your hair in my opinion.

I told my son never to start a fight in school but if some bully decided to do it then finish it.  He did exactly as I allowed him to.  No turning the other cheek crap if the bully insisted on being a bully.  My judgment was that punishment was not warranted and school would have punished him for protecting himself.

No allowing idiots to dish out their version of justice without warrant if I can help it.   These are the same idiots that had the police officer standing with his hand on his gun while I was at the forced parent teacher conference.  I was trucking cross country and was threatened with jail time if I did not appear at their kangaroo court.....  I guess because I told them I thought it was great that the Homosexual teacher was removed from from the world and  being a threat to the young boys by his jealous lover.... they put up a bronze plaque for him on the school  wall.

No I would not allow these idiots to punish my child - even a swat.....[waiting]

We've always had paddling here. Still do. I had a record of sorts when I was in school.  :-[

Parents should be notified if a child is misbehaving.    Allowing them to "dish out" the proper punishment.   The child should be expelled from school if he is a habitual misbehaver, or if the parents are unable to control the child . . .

The "problem" child is very disruptive.   The other kids are unable to get a proper education.   A disruptive child should be removed immediately from the classroom, a parent should be notified and the child sent home after school.   Authorities should be called if the child is breaking the law . . .    ( Drugs, guns, knives, making threats, etc . . . )

I was threatened by the vice-principal once when I was in 9th grade, that he would call my father if I didn't straighten up . . .    That's all it took.    I think I would rather be punished by the vice-principal than my father.   My father never struck me, but I wouldn't have the privileges that I enjoyed.    ( TV, having friends over, after school activities, etc. . . )   Fortunately I had good parents that had an interest in what I did.

My kids attend(ed) a middle school in the north valley of ABQ.  There is a wide range of economic status at this school, and there are a significant amount of kids who attend from a single or zero parent family.  Lots and lots of them.  Many of these kids are living with a grandparent, or an aunt or uncle.  Their parents belong to gangs as well, and many of them are either in prison, stoned, or in flight of the law.

The school is used as a day care facility for many of these young teens.  The guardians don't care where these kids are, as long as they are not in the house.  These kids run roughshot over the school, because there just is no discipline that they respect.  Many of them are treading water until they can drop out of school, or go to juvenile hall.

From volunteering in this school, I've heard about and seen all sorts of incredibly nasty stuff.  Some of the weaker teachers are so intimidated, they don't even try to maintain order in the classroom, and one teacher last year would laugh at a student who would go around and sexually harass the girls.  It eventually caught up with the kid, but his punishment was a 4 week out / in school suspension.  He didn't care.

These kids won't get disciplined at home, and the school policy is such that they can't be permanently removed unless they do something heinous.  Either the kids or the guardians need a good beating.  Maybe both.  Need to change school policy too.  (Our dropout rate is enormous. )

Strike three and your out. . .    Maybe misbehaving kids can go to a military type facility.   Worse kids, jail . . .

Hmm - looks like the UN may put a stop to spankings if they get their way and Obama seems to know how to get 'er done by treaty.

About time.  We can't have people like Ernest T. Bass roaming all over America.  Good grief.  If we had educated, talented, God fearing, family loving people as a growing demographic, can you imagine what that would do to the liberal agenda?

(Actually, after reading that article, there was one point I did agree with.... allowing children to choose their own religion.  I believe that has to be a matter of personal choice, or it lacks emphasis.)

As far as I know, they still distribute swats in the schools here.    I used to teach childrens' church when I was growing up (I wasn't much older than the kids I was teaching, but looked older and thus ended up with the job.)  There was one little boy who was quite a rounder, but wasn't a bad kid.  His redneck mom was talking to me one day about his issues at school, and she said that she'd gotten a call at work the other day telling her he'd done something bad.  She said she told them, "Well, whoop him; I can't take off work right now."  The principal said, "Ma'am, we've adopted a policy where we don't use corporal punishment."  Obviously redneck mom didn't know the difference between "corporal" and "capitol" and retorted, "I didn't say KILL him.  I just said whoop him!!"  After that time, they did reinstate corporal punishment because the school got out of control.

My solution is to teach my kids at home so I don't have to trust things to the judgement of someone else... if my kids need a spanking, then I can issue it myself.  We don't have to use them often, and my kids immediately fall silent when I open the kitchen drawer with wooden spoons, and spankings are only used when there is not another disciplinary measure that would be just as effective if not more so. I learned this from my best friend's mom.  When we were teenagers, I was eating lunch at their house one day.  She, and her siblings and I were having a spirited conversation and being pretty noisy, and their mom reached over and opened up to get a spatula out of a kitchen drawer and immediately everyone kind of straightened up in their chairs and got quiet, and then when their mom turned back to the stove with the spatula, they all kind of laughed at themselves and explained that when they were littler, their mom used a wooden spatula to swat them.  It makes a good paddle as it stings, but won't actually injure anyone.  I rarely have to use mine for that purpose.

I'm 37 yrs old and I got paddled a lot in school back in PA.  People in New England can't believe it when I tell them.  Teachers used to have paddles leaning against the chalk-board with names like "Stingray" on them.  One teacher drilled a hole in the paddle every time he paddled a kid - the myth was that the more holes, the less wind resistance and therefore an exponential increase in pain.  In one case, my 2nd grade class had a test.  Following the test, kids lined up and got paddled for the number of questions they got wrong.  I swear I'm not making this up; I wish I was.  I don't feel scarred for life or anything, but I do think it (paradoxically) shapped my mistrust of authority and overall rebelliousness.  Order through fear is bull-crap.  Ahh good ol' PA, the necks down there are truely a deeper shade of red.

Not really on topic, but..

I'm bitter towards public school.. well, that's a bit of an understatement. I was expelled from every school in my district (elementary, middle, and high school). 8 schools total. I have decided to let my kids (when I have them) go to public school, and I'll keep my cool the best I can around the teachers.

I dropped out at 16, immediately got my GED (scored in the top 3 out of ~200), and went to college. Never learned a damn thing in school.
