   Isn't this a safety issue?  I wouldn't want a treehouse with power lines directly under it  . . .

Golden Chief Building Official Gerry George told CBS4 on Tuesday he remains concerned about the treehouse. He said it has no guard rails, is too close to the street and has power lines directly beneath it.

. . . said the focus was safety, not filling town coffers with permit money . . .

Classic case of the Nanny State. Gotta save those folks from themselves. Maybe we should strap pillows to all the kids in case they fall off the monkey bars. Oh wait, they took the monkey bars out of a lot of playgrounds. I got a good idea; let's make a law, stating that kids have to wear helmets while sliding! By the way, a lawmaker in Massachusetts actually proposed that boner last year. Let's also mandate that kids wear helmets while on a swing. They could fall off and whack their noggin. Betcha that law gets proposed soon. d* d*

Woods,

The problem is if the city allowed them to complete the tree house and someone's little progeny gets zapped, the doting parents would sue the crap out of the electric company. We have the nanny state because so many zipperheads need nannies.

Pagancelt,

You have assumed a fact that has not been introduced as evidence. To say that someone may sue someone in the future is a red herring. What is in contention is the intrusiveness of government into every aspect of our lives. Also, you wrote "We have the nanny state because so many zipperheads need nannies." I'm not sure if you are aware, but the term zipperhead is commonly used as a derogatory term to describe folks of Asian descent.

Woods,

We live in a highly litigious society, so it's not a red herring to bring up the potentiality of a lawsuit, whether against the homeowner or any other entity. I agree with the intrusiveness of government.

I did not know "zipperhead" was a racially derogatory term for Asians. For me, I use it with the implication that someone has been lobotomized. So in my usage it would be a psychologically derogatory word.

A treehouse with a power line under it does seem like a bad idea.

Young kids do not think but adults should.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
