why is the department of education buying shotguns?  Not just shotties, but 14" barrel, ghost ring equipped, 870 police model combat shotguns?

The IRS bought some too. Most likely for security of their offices in DC. I think the feds are worried about something.

I don't think that is unreasonable, given the fact that there have already been suicide missions against the IRS.  It would be irresponsible not to increase security.  Surely firearms are a legitimate part of that, right?

The IRS one I could kinda see, it was allegedly for the "investigation" side of the IRS.  The folks who routinely deal with drug runners and the like.  It wasn't the police that got Al Capone, it was the the IRS.  I don't think the IRS one was that unreasonable given the context.

But this is the department of education, why does the department of education have any requirement on any level to need class 3 firearms?

"The Office of Inspector General is the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Education and is responsible for the detection of waste, fraud, abuse, and other criminal activity involving Federal education funds, programs, and operations. As such, OIG operates with full statutory law enforcement authority, which includes conducting search warrants, making arrests, and carrying firearms. The acquisition of these firearms is necessary to replace older and mechanically malfunctioning firearms, and in compliance with Federal procurement requirements. Call 911 if you have $300 to pay for the call, eh? [waiting]
