I've had a lot of people (Glenn?  this is for you man!) asking me to push this up to youtube, and .... presto!  Whining pays!

This is a pole structure with a thick earthen roof.  Under construction.

This is a design by the popular eco building author Mike Oehler.  And it is on Mike's land - it will be his latest creation.

Thanks, Paul.  Is Mike actively building on this now?  I know he has had it in the works for a long time.

He recommended that we add the diagonal bracing also when I told him that my wife wanted more glass and exposure on the south side.  Mike has really spent a lot of time and effort creating and documenting ideas that work.

I used his 10'6 spacing in a couple areas then diagonaled down from a 21 foot girder 5'3 in each way from the ends leaving a 10'6 span in the center but taking the load down to around 20 feet clear inside to give me a wide open bottom area but still maintain the 10'6 engineered span on the top.

Since this moves the center load to the sides near the other footing it is essential that the ground can support the load either on it's own or by adding an adequate footing.

This gives diagonal bracing and a clear span for an unobstructed larger room while still meeting the original engineering numbers..

Thanks for the look at the house, Paul.

As per usual.  Thanks for taking video and uploading and sharing :)   c*

That's quite a bit bigger then the 50 dollar and up house lol.

Maybe I missed it but what is the purpose for this building?  Is he just builing it as a model or does he want to move back up the hill?

He's gonna live there.  He has built a road up to it.

I think the key is that a lot of people worry about the word "underground" and this house is clearly above ground.

Great post and video. Keep them coming!

I'm interesting in log pole building, I have built a small structure with peeled logs but I know I didn't do it right. Just started building and now I don't know if it's worth  keeping it... That aside I would like to use logs to build more structures since we have MANY 50' tall straight as an arrow trees on our property.

Is his book good for that type of information? Is is basic enough for a begginner?

Paul,

I think your camera work is improving and always interesting material.

Solar Burrito

Ya Paul, I agree on the camera work, it's getting better but next time slow the camera moments down a little. I assume you're using a point and shoot still camera?

Yes, oehler's book is very good for beginners.

camera work:  yes, I am using a still camera for video!  It fits in my pocket easily.  And this video shows me with my old camera and me with my new camera.
