Is this a decent pistol? The price is right. My whole life Ive owned shotguns and rifles, but never a pistol. It would be more for my wifes protection than anything. I need something low priced. Please give me your thougts?

She doesn't like to shoot a shotgun?  Lots of coverage pretty cheap.

Hi-points are a love/hate thing.  Some folks love them and some folks hate them.

Some women don't like the recoil of the 40S&W (I don't like it in some pistols).

9mm might be a consideration.

For the price, it is a decent pistol, although I don't have any personal experience.

What Poppy said. Personally, I don't care for them.
You might want to look at a good revolver. I dislike Autos anyway and even though I carry a 1911, I'm constantly tinkering with it to make sure it functions.

For people that only want a gun for protection and a little fun shooting, a nice 357 is hard to beat. Plenty of power, you can shoot 38's in it for low recoil and they aare reliable without learning and constantly practicing clearing drills.

They can also be had for a very good price these days.

I will say this....A defense gun is something you hope you never need, much like a life jacket. Buying a cheap defense gun that may not preform if needed is like buying a blow up life ring because of the price. If you do have to use it, it'd better work.

No, I even gotta .410 so she just has to point in the general direction. She doesnt like it "too long" she said.

Idid do some googleing and found out what you'll are saying about the love /hate thing.

I was considering it in .380.

I never really liked revolvers, except the one clint eastwood carried because he made it cool. But maybe Ill give 'em another look

You should check the price and availibity of 380 ammo before you decide. I saw it go as high as 75.00 for a box of 50, during the height of the insanity.

380 has sort of become an orphan for the last little while. The manufacturers seem to prefer to make 9MM. 380 is just a short 9MM.

One thing to keep in mind about pistols. Even many of the better made 380's require a lot of rounds to be fired through before the mechanism works reliably. Some come out and state that 200+ rounds should be fired before placing the firearm into service.

Revolvers are simple. It's very easy to tell when a revolver is empty, just empty the cylinder. No need to worry about if the safety is on or off.

Before picking an automatic test how difficult it is to use; the charging and trigger pull may be too much for some folks. Have your wife try it. Some small pistols have horrendous trigger pulls, making it more difficult to use accurately.

That is some bad info as with any gun ALWAYS WORRY WEATHER THE SAFTY IS ON OR OFF!!!!!!
With a pistol the barrel is short and there is more danger of it being pointed in the wrong direction.

Whitlock, yes everyone should treat every gun as loaded and dangerous until the gun is proven completely empty. My point maybe needs some further explanation. Revolvers don't have a safety lever or button at all, is my point. I've seen people who can not remember which position of the safety on a pistol or rifle is "on" and which is "off". With folks like that there's a 50-50 chance they get it right. And there's a n equally good chance they will have the safety "on" when they need to fire it in self defense. A revolver that can be used as a DA or a SA is better for many if you look at it that way.

Revolvers also don't leave one round in the chamber as a pistol may. This is even more dangerous to people who do not know and and handle and use their pistol frequently. The newspaper or TV news has a story every so often where someone forgets about the round left in the chamber when they remove the magazine. Someone gets shot. That doesn't happen with a revolver.

Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.

Any opinion about the Glock with the safety built into the trigger?   Doesn't seem that safe to me.

I guess it depends on the situation, obviously if you have kids you don't want to have a glock with one in the chamber. Only other option with a glock is not keeping one in the chamber, and that's still not too safe with kids around.

My CZ 75b SP-01 has no safety, just a decocker. I'm 21 and I live alone, so I keep it ready.

To the OP: I have owned a Hi-Point 995 and a Hi-Point 380. Put atleast 300 rounds through both before I decided they were too ugly. Not a single failure. Hi-Points are known to have a break-in period, though mine were fine from the beginning. If you're going for a gun for your dash, Hi-Point is the ideal weapon.. you can slam it around and not worry about it.
