Grapeshot, Kenny, Double Tap and Ms Kenny, had an enjoyable breakfast this morning...and it lasted till lunch:P

I didn't take any pictures (We were talking politics and guns) the subject came around to the Bread Slicer, a .308 I built as a pack gun and OC on occasion. I decided to cart it around this afternoon and since Grape Shot wondered about the stock and why I call it the Bread Slicer, here it is. It has a 16.5 inch barrel

The butt is 3/4" at it's widest. Now you know how it got it's name  :-\

These here is God's finest scupturings! And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here!

Interesting design Pete

Is that a stock Mauser barrel ?

I can't tell for sure from the pic but it almost looks like it has a 'stepped' barrel like my surplus 8X57

If it is, is it a rebored 7X57 or an Argentine barrel ?

I think I can understand the nick name

I think a bit of pad would be worth the weight
Often, our ignorance is not as great as our reluctance to act on what we know.

A number of years ago, I bought out a gunsmith that had gone broke. All he had was really junk. There was a box of Spanish Mauser parts. I put together several of them. The barrel on this one was badly damaged at the muzzle. I did what any self respecting tinkerer would do...and cut it just over legal length ;D

I didn't have enough box magazines for all the actions and I had this crazy idea of making the lightest rifle possible. This is the result. It is a joy to carry and a nightmare to shoot.

The barrel is stepped. I learned a long time ago not to taper stepped barrel. It ruins the harmonics and they don't shoot worth a darn.

So to answer your question, it i a Spanish Mauser that had been converted to .308 NATO. The action were not really suited to those pressures so I keep the loads on the lighter side (also saves wear and tear on my shoulder) :)

This is the gun I hand the range idiots that claim they can shoot anything (with full house loads)
