This afternoon we had our annual "Chili on the Scenic Highway"  We almost waited too long as most of the trees at that altitude had already lost most of their color. Normally we would have went up last weekend which would have been the peak color for the leaves but conflicting schedules prevented it.  This is about 1000 ft elevation climb from the house.  We went from Partly cloudy at 40 degrees to snow and 31 degrees in a matter of about 10 air miles. As you can see it is probably the first snowfall of the season. Qhat you can't see because of the snow was the beautiful scenery.  Some might remrmber last years post of the same area.  Mid October snow which is not a good sign for what is to come. But we had a great afternoon.  Chili, chili and more chili.  We took some propane eye heaters and stapled tarps to block the blowing snow.  Good food and good fellowship.

This is just starting up at about 3,000 ft

The farther we go up the worse it is.

This was last years picture of the same overlook.  Quite a difference.

Careful, John, you'll freeze your munchkin. :)

Looks like it was fun.

We got enough snow high up to close the pass I heard.  Snow level forecast to be above 8000 feet.

beautiful, pics though... we're having an exceptionally early fall here, too... it has been way cooler than usual ever since August.  I'm already starting to want to decorate for Christmas.  The trees on our place are gorgeous right now... we've had so much rain this year the color is great.  The sumac literally looks like it was spray-painted fire engine red.
