I have never been a huge fan of pocket doors.  But for small floor plans, pocket doors and something like this might make all the sense in the world.

There might even be some patent plans which could give good guidance for a home-made version of something like this.

I can visualize it working but to be effective there would have to be a top & bottom pivot point as well as a top & bottom rail.
