AC/CA on generator?

I'm pretty sure this is a dumb question, but here goes - if anybody will know the answer, then you all will.  I have googled this with no luck BTW.   Like a knucklehead, I spec'd the 3/4 hp submersible pump for my well not knowing that it required 220v.  The 1/2 hp uses 110.  Anyway, I showed up at my site full of optimism (among other things) and dragged my 5000w Coleman generator out to wire up to the well, to see the wondrous flow of water.  The pump controller is there and the installer had tested it already.

So, there I was confronted with a 220v requirement and 110v available on the outlets of my generator - except the AC/CA plug which is 220.  I have an extension that plugs in there that brings out multiple 110s, but no 220.  The manual gives no help.  Help! How do I wire this to deliver 220 to my well controller?  My 5000w genny ought to be plenty to run this 3/4hp submersible, right?  ???

Hi George...I hope I understand your question...

You should have two separate 120V phases.  That 240V outlet should provide three connections... one prong to one phase, one prong to the other phase, and a ground. 

You get 240V by using the two 120V lines.  They are phased 180 degrees apart, so at their peak, the voltage differential sums to 240V. 

Your well pump should have two hot legs and a ground that goes to it.  Tie one leg to phase 1, the other leg to phase 2, attach the genset ground to the well pump ground, and you should be good to go. 

The startup current surge is probably greater than 5kW, but if you can get the pump running you'll be fine with 5kW to water to the surface.
