This is inspired by a post by desdawg in another topic...

Obama has supposedly chosen Bill Richardson (D) for Secretary of Commerce. I feel this is a good thing for New Mexico and the country both.

Good for NM: Governor Bill came into office in 2003 with the state enjoying a large budgetary surplus, thanks to Governor Gary Johnson (R). Today the state of NM suffers from a large deficit, in part (mainly?) due to the spend, spend, spend economic theories of Governor Bill.

Good for the USA: Governor Bill is a silver tongued devil. He has brought businesses to NM. One of Commerce's jobs is to talk other countries into trade with the USA. Bill's the man.

That said, I miss Gary Johnson; in a state that is/was 2:1 (D:R) NM experienced the longest period without a tax-increase in the state's entire history (8 years) and had a budget surplus! Gary was Mr. Veto when it came to signing legislature spending bills. He was also the only (R) governor to not endorse Bush for President.

Oh, Governor Bill was the driving force behind the New Mexico policy of giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

All in all, I'll be glad to see him leave the state government. It remains to be seen if his successor is more fiscally responsible.
Just because something has been done and has not failed, doesn't mean it is good design.
