Russia ratchets up US tensions with arms sales to Iran and Venezuela
Tony Halpin in Moscow

Russia snubbed its nose at the United States today by announcing plans to sell military equipment to both Iran and Venezuela.

The head of the state arms exporter said that Russia was negotiating to sell new anti-aircraft systems to Iran despite American objections.

"Contacts between our countries are continuing and we do not see any reason to suspend them," Anatoly Isaikin, general director of Rosoboronexport, told Ria-Novosti at an arms fair in South Africa.

Reports have circulated for some time that Russia is preparing to sell its S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Iran, offering greater protection against a possible US or Israeli attack on the Islamic republic's nuclear facilities. The missiles have a range of more than 150 kilometres and can intercept jets approaching at low altitudes.

Ruslan Pukhov, director of the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies in Moscow, said that it was logical to conclude a lucrative contract with Iran "in the current situation, when the US and the West in general are stubbornly gearing toward a confrontation with Russia".

Russia has already delivered 29 Tor-M1 missile systems under a $700 million deal with Iran in 2005.

Sergei Chemezov, the head of state-owned Russian Technologies also disclosed that Venezuela's leader Hugo Chavez wanted to buy anti-aircraft systems, armoured personnel carriers, and new SU-35 fighter jets when they come into production in 2010.

US plans to site an anti-missile shield in eastern Europe to deter surprise attacks from Iran have outraged Russia, which believes the system in Poland and the Czech Republic is aimed at weakening its defences.

Strains between Nato and Russia after the war in Georgia have also contributed to a sharp deterioration in relations.

Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, one of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's closest allies, has visited Venezuela and Cuba this week. Kommersant said that Russia was forming "alliance relations" with the two anti-American regimes as a response to US involvement in former Soviet republics.

Mr Sechin said that "military-technological cooperation" between Russia and Venezuela was increasing, adding that the two sides were also in talks on oil and shipbuilding projects.

President Chavez is expected to visit Moscow next week. Two Russian long-range strategic nuclear bombers landed in the Venezuelan capital Caracas last week, the first time they had visited the Latin American state.

The TU-160 Blackjack supersonic bombers took off last night for the return journey to Russia after completing their patrol mission along the South American coast, air force spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Vladimir Drik said.

Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, voiced concern at Russian bomber flights close to American shores last month and warned Moscow that it was playing a "dangerous game".

Mr Sechin travelled to Nicaragua yesterday as part of Russia's efforts to revive its influence on America's doorstep in Latin America. Nicaragua was the only state to join Russia in recognising the independence of Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and President Daniel Ortega is also due to visit Moscow soon.

    * Have your say

Very simple policy response is in order.

A missile launch from Iran or Venezuela with Russian-provided armaments will be regarded as a direct attack from Russia.

It goes back to the John Kennedy doctrine. No surprises from use; nothing new.

Venezuela has not done more to help the poor people than Americans you are out of touch big time the US did more to help poor people in the last for hours than Chavez has done at all Venezuela is a third world country he doesn't even help his own people GET REAL

Jerry, clifton park, USA

If Russia wishes to offer military support to Iran then Europe should cease trade with them and do without their resources. The greater disadvantage will be to them.
These here is God's finest scupturings! And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here!

The way I see it, Payback's a bitch.

If our warmonger in chief and his puppetmasters weren't such a--holes there would be no need for them to protect themselves from our previous and threatened future pre-emptive strikes.  I have been saying this was coming for years and I don't blame anyone who tries to protect their own household.

What would you do if it was you? hmm

We should allow our loose cannons in DC to go around the world threatening and bullying everyone and not expect them to protect themselves? hmm

We need to open our eyes.  We are the class bully and the rest of the little students are tired of our sh-t.  They will soon be waiting around the corner for us and one day they will win.

Where's Congolisa get off giving Russia a bad time all of the time.  We are over there stirring up the hornets nest intending to put a missile shield in their back yard that will be capable of taking Russia out...and they should not complain?  Get real.  Who the hell do we think we are anyway.  Get these idiots out of DC. :o

Why do we let those bastards in Washington DC get us into these situations? hmm  We need to admit it....they are making the rest of the world think we are a--holes.

I guess we just don't have enough balls to take them out ourselves.  I'm getting damn tired of them.  >:(

Note that I am not favoring Russia in this for any reason other than pure human scruples.

Russia illegally occupied Lithuania in the past when my grandparents came over in 1889 and I have not been real fond of them since, but lets get real here and try to look at things the way the rest of the world sees them.

Note that I often refer to the Russian news services because they seem to be much less controlled than the government controlled news in the US.

At least they allow people to state their views over there without having a group of geeks working the net removing objectionable news or running denial of service campaigns against sites they do not agree with such as Rense or WRH.... and they even get to see pix of our dead and wounded servicemen, which should be shown here so people would not be so gung-ho for the oil/power war.

It seems there are many less dead Russian whistleblowers than there are American ones who speak up for things such as 9/11 truth - another one recently killed -as well as one a little bit earlier.

It is my belief that our sons and daughters should be brought home and made into the strongest military in the world to defend our country, here.  We can launch an attack in minutes to any point in the world...but that does not keep the money flowing from the future American taxpayers to the pockets of the present elite.  What the hell are we doing? hmm

Their voluntary service should not be mis-appropriated to squander their lives and spill their blood on the soils of poor oil bearing countries who are unable to defend themselves, but can carry on a good guerrilla warfare that will continue to kill our loved ones for as long as we allow the corporations to use them as cheap security to guard their business investments and massive oil and war machine profit sources.

The fact is that our idiots in Washington DC are fully responsible for fabricating this new threat.  :o

Russia Today: USA to use GEORGIA to attack IRAN!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQVT9LbvwPA

(1296 bytes) [c]    Print
This is not at all surprising, this is WHY the US reacted so badly to the Russians stopping the Georgians shelling South Ossetia

When asked if an attack on South Ossetia was a prelude to an attack on Iran, the State Duma Deputy said, "We know that this war in South Ossetia is somehow connected with the aggression of Washington against Iran and the possible bombing of Iran."

"Washington helped Georgia to take control of both South Ossetia and Abkhazia, (because) Washington needs Georgian territory to use for bombing against Iran," he added.

The US and Israel have long threatened to launch air strikes against Iranian nuclear installations under the pretext that Tehran, a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has plans to develop nuclear weaponry.

This is while the UN nuclear watchdog has confirmed that Iran enriches uranium-235 to a level of 3.7 percent - a rate consistent with the construction of a nuclear power plant. Nuclear arms production requires an enrichment level of above 90 percent.

Currently suffering from electricity shortage, Iran has been forced to adopt a rationing program by scheduling power outages - of up to two hours a day - across both urban and rural areas in the country.

American and U.K. media is feeding you lies about what happened in Georgia the night of August 7th, 2008. CNN claims that Russia invaded Georgia. The truth is Georgia had committed the act of genocide against people of South Ossetia, and Russia had no choice but to protect its own citizens!

---------

The war is over Caspian basin oil and natural gas routes worth TRILLIONS of dollars!

USA and Israel wants to grab the big pie, so they trained and armed Georgia military to invade to massacre South Ossetia civilians (Russian nationals and peacekeepers)! Russia's retaliation is justified.

Georgia president Mikhail Saakashvilli and Ministry of Defence Davit Kezerashvili (Israeli) are the traitors to Georgian state. Prosecute them for war crimes!

BBC, Sky News, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS are lying about Russia being a sole aggressor! Neoconservative-Neoliberal factions and Zionists orchestrated the plan using Georgia as a puppet only to lose big time!

The Neocon-Neolib and Zionists are trying to start World War III by attacking Russia and Iran (the latter with U.S.-EU armada to prepare warfare and naval blockade)!

USA, EU (NATO) and Israel are seriously messing with Shanghai Cooperation Organization

I am reminded of an essay or short book I have read by a man named Smedly Butler.  He was a major general in the US Marine corps and at the time the most decorated soldier ever after receiving two congressional medal of honors and the marine corps brevet medal.  Career soldier, over 30 years involved in 5 or 6 wars including ww1.

It was written in 1935, you'll be amazed how scary close the situations between then and now are.

It's not too long, you can read the entire book online free at

I read at least some of that once, muldoon, and have heard the name, Smedly Butler, many times.  I'm going to look at it again.  Thanks for the link.

America has covertly ruled most of the world for almost 60 years. This is just another example of our meddling. Prosparity does not just happen by accident. In order for the US to prosper others have suffered. All that aid we send all over the world is mostly payoffs for favors to american intrests at the expense of the locals. Food aid was designed to make huge populations dependent and vulnerable to US will. Sorry no free lunch.

glenn kangiser

Seems I only read passages of his thoughts, muldoon.  Not this story.  A great read by the way.

It is almost the same exact thing as I was saying.  A repeat of history so the few can profit at the expense of many.  Heck -- I just read an article saying that they have traced ome of the IED (buried bomb) parts to Florida.  We are working both sides of the war for profit at the expense of the lives or our servicemen.  Many of our weapons get to the other side to be used against our men.  There is a great black market going where many of the guns sent to our allies in Iraq are sent straight to the other side for profit.  Great for the men and corporations in CONUS who profit from the war - like the Bush/Cheney family and near all in higher government profit in one way or another.

Not so great for our servicemen who bleed, die and get their brains scrambled or our children who may have to pay for this, if they don't destroy the economy entirely and just default on it all.

Some of the Servicemen in Iraq are now realizing where they are at as evidenced by the fragging of two of the Sargents by an enlisted man who was tired of their crap for nothing.  http://www.uruknet.de/?p=m47320&hd=&size=1&l=e

Thanks again for the link, muldoon.  I encourage everyone to have a look so you don't have to just take my word for it.  Take it from a career Marine who opened his eyes and wasn't afraid to look and admit the truth.

You have it right there, Scott.  All to benefit the elite.  (Elite defined by me as "Rich Scum -usually the ruling class with power and no conscience or guilt for the death of the citizens they view as ants under them"....Example no guilt about the citizens they killed on 9/11 to get approval for their oil wars--  forget the terrorist with box cutters fable-- these were Saudi's mostly so the Gov. fable goes- Saudi's are viewed by the Bush family as "Family" - see --- Bandar Bush--- surely willing to do a favor for them).

Just came across this on a search - may be a bit off color but tells of Bandar Bush

Sorry Glenn

I would help you out here... but you do not need much help.. you are well armed as is... and I have been staying at the new house... it is an hour and a half away...No internet there...Wife comes up to see me every 3-4 days... We just figured I could speed up the renovations if I did not have to spend 3 hours a day commuting...So I took up a air mattress a radio and a cooler and I have been staying there.

It is a absolute disgusting mess... gutting out rotten wood in the house... :-\....I am not a carpenter or a craftsman like Peg...But the work that was done in the past is so bad I do not even know what they were thinking...I have never seen anything this bad...It is sort of rip it out... try to get it close to plum and start over again...It is taking forever

a couple more weeks I might have internet up there and have the wife living there full time...I have the laundry room finished so the washer and dryer can get hooked up this week...Still no kitchen and several rooms need the walls closed in inside I hate drywall and I am looking at other options...

I love the discussion though Glenn...It is mind boggling to me how we can surround Russia with our aircraft ships and build bases and missile deployment systems in Eastern europe... and to the south of Russia.. not to mention that we took over Iraq Afghanistan and are working on getting bases in turkey as well.

But have the Russians land a plane thousands of miles from the USA in Venezuela and we issue warnings...makes me want to puke

hey ben,

hang in there. it's like eating an elephant, you do it one bite at a time. i must be crazy, i think i am the only one on this forum that actually likes hanging drywall. as far as russia goes, you are correct. what did we expect them to do. they have to save face somehow.
unless we recognize who's really in charge, things aren't going to get better.

Here is an article proving that we did training in Georgia.

I caution you to view any statement of denial or different causes or purposes by our side as a cover up of the truth to make us look better.  Our people are not about to admit that we instigated this.  All they have to do is tell the lies and 90% of the sheeple here will believe that Russia started this.

Analysed as partly due to the failure of the Georgia operation, it looks like our people are pulling false flag operations in Pakistan with the bombing of the Marriot.

Marines carried in black boxes of ???? and took them to the 4/5 floors before the blast according to reports, against wishes of security and without going through security sensors.  Many reports, insiders and knowledgeable people say we, with help of CIA and Mossad did it.

Decide to resist us - we'll blow you up.

Check out comments after the article for insight into how this act is viewed around the world and by knowing ones here.

CIA crack lab probly caught fire and blew up. Pure accident I'm sure. The marines where probly just delivering aid packages from home.

glenn kangiser

Funny that should happen, but our allies in Pakistan - you know -  the ones we paid to pay off the so called hijackers for helping with the destruction of the WTC? hmm      ..... they aren't buying it.

Quote# Pakistan's ISI, obedient to the CIA and the Pentagon, is an integral part of the U.S. government's 9-11 conspiracy. In late September 2001, the FBI released a report that unnamed sources in Pakistan were financing Al-Qaeda. A subsequent FBI report stated that the money transfer was sent out of Pakistan by the ISI, ordered by the head of the agency, Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad, who wired $100,000 to alleged "9-11 mastermind" Mohammed Atta in the Summer of 2001.

# By some marvelous coincidence, Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad just happened to be on an official visit to Washington D.C. from September 4 to September 13, 2001, during the 9-11 attacks, meeting with George Tenet, Director of the CIA, with Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Senator Joseph Biden, Senator Bob Graham and Rep. Porter Goss.

# Sen. Graham and Rep. Goss were having breakfast with Ahmad on the very morning of 9-11, with the money-man behind the 9-11 attacks, according to the FBI. And then Graham and Goss were later put in charge of the U.S. government's so-called "investigation" of 9-11.

# On September 12 and 13, 2001, Gen. Ahmad — head of Pakistan's ISI, "financier" of the 9-11 attacks, CIA-backed supporter of Al-Qaeda — met with Colin Powell and Richard Armitage in the State Department to discuss the terms of Pakistan's "cooperation" in the "war on terrorism". (Cooperation, indeed.)

The story is that we are almost out of Oil but you can't believe these criminals and their owned media.

we have plenty of oil left... I should have typed that almost all of the easy access oil is gone...we need to either drill miles below the ocen floor or pipe it from alaska to get at it.... the easy to reach shallow oil in Oklahoma and Texas is all but dried up

benevolance

and to further explain..while there is oil yet to drill and find... it is not the answer... it is not even a good band aid... we have 3-4 % of the worlds oil and we consume over 25% of the worlds supply... It is insane to think that increased drilling is the solution to this problem.

Automobiles plastics and fertilizers are the main uses of Oil for America...We need to find alternative ways to create fertilizers and plastics that do not use crude oil...And we already have several choices if we want to eliminate using crude oil for the automobile industry...

The answer is not increased drilling... but rather to use other products....As long as the Conservatives keep selling the drill baby drill policy to americans we are heading in the wrong direction.
