Awww!  Now that is cute!  What a pose, too.  Needs to be in the calendar for the feed store.

Really nice stock, Mark.

I did a bit of tanning - very little -- rabbit skins when I had about 300 of them, and an elk hide a friend gave me.  That's about it.

Cute!  How many cows do you have?  My dad  raised some calves - we would feed them with the bottle - they'd constantly try to lick you with their slobbery tongues  :-\  they were cute, though, but not as cute as that one!

My Daughter has around 35 of them right now. She raises them for custom meat that people want that has no antibotics or steriods in it. The Highlands have less colesteral and is much leaner. She also tans all the hides to sell which helps to pay for the winter 70 tons of hay needed to feed them. Mark H.

Wow, 70 tons of feed?  Had no idea.  How long does it take her, generally, to tan a hide?  I bet the meat goes for a good price - it's so hard to find any type of beef, chicken, pork that isn't full of antibiotics, steroids - & then we have to worry about cloned & GM & listeria eating phagocytes sprayed on it...  ugggghhh

Meat normaly is $2.00 a lb plus cut and wrap fees from the butcher. Tanning a hide is a few step process but the cleaning/prep time is a few hours, soaking in a vat a few days, tumbleing and oiling the leather 1-2 day process them brushing out the hide. One thing I left out is the salting process that takes a while to remove moisture out of the hide so the vat solution will be sucked into the leather to start the tanning process. Mark

I would love to be there poster child! They throw them in the Okanogan River during Stampeed Weekend. One time they thru there camera in the river and locked them in jail for getting in the way of the race. They did not come back the next year I guess the Cowboys and Rednecks were a little hard on them. Mark
