busted knuckles

between joists for ridge beam support. stand lumber on end? or on edge? Thank you in advance.
you know that mugshot of Nick Nolte? I wish I looked that good.

I'm assuming these are carrying a post from ridge to subfloor and are standing on end under the subfloor and running down to a girder or wall. If so stand them up on end, cut a hair longer than the joist is tall... they take the point load squash rather than the I joist. Under sliding door or similar sized header supports as well.
