I wonder if there is a short wood building competition.  I see a bunch of the member on here would win!!

The latest big change in the NDS, National Design Specification for Wood Construction, the code referenced wood design manual, was a section on the design of cross laminated timber structures. Think of plywood 6-12" thick made up of plies of 2x material glued in alternating vertical and horizontal directions. Openings and utilities are included in the panel much like a SIP and they are craned in and quickly assembled.  A solid timber wall. With the fire testing, bending tests etc over the past, well about 20 years starting in Europe, they have recently allowed them to go up to 12 stories. I decided not to go to this cycle of NDS training or update manuals, busy and it isn't cheap, a friend went so hopefully I'll get to pick his brain soon. This is still out on the horizon for common residential use I imagine but a neat concept and potential use for things like small or beetle killed timber, there are multiple core layers. If it is of interest, google or link through from the awc.org site, the industry design manual is still free at this point.

A page of example uses of cross laminated timber.
None of us are as smart as all of us.
