Im planning on building a very small cabin 8x8 with a couple windows and a standard triangle roof. Im wondering how I could Insulate it to be able to be out in below freezing temperatures in it and be comfortable. I don't know if I would also have to insulate the roof and floor. Or could I just do the walls? Thanks

Remember heat rises and water falls.  Without any ceiling insulation what ever heat you put into the building would just escape via the roof not to mention condensation.  The walls are second and the floor last.  As far as heat loss.  Being the size of your build you will probably use the smallest allowable lumber demensions. IE 2X6 rafters, 2X8 floor joist and 2X4 walls.  Ceilings usually require a R30 and above.  Hard to get that with regular batts. Batt insulation will only be R17-18 in the ceiling w/2X6 rafter after air baffles. R13 in the walls.  You can achieve more with rigid foam or spray foam but do you want to go to that expense.

if you used 2x10 lumber for the roof you could put R-23 batts (2x12s could accept the thicker R-30 batts)....if you up sized the wall framing from 2x4s to 2x6s you could use R-19 batts.

With a cabin that small the cost will be higher to use the larger framing lumber but not very much in the grand scheme. If built well without drafts it could probably be heated with a couple candles or oil lamps.....hunting cabin I am assuming?
