Why don't you make your own- doesn't even really have to be cedar - they even used pine-

Just get a froe and a mallet and some nice straignt wood and go to work. :)

One word PULPWOOD
If a place has trees 8" the pulpwood companes clear cut it, where cindy and i have been looking for land near her folks is old kaolin strip mines that has been bulldozed or clear cut paper company land.

I guess I'm used to seeing lots of trees 2' or more in diameter a lot - I haven't actually made shingles in over 40 years - grandpa did - I used to cut and haul a few red cedar shingle bolts.  Guess I need to get a froe and  try it again.

I think I'd rather have two kidneys then vinyl siding.  It gets brittle over time and looks ???  Un-natural.  We found cedar shakes at 1/2 price from a local roofer.

Sorry 'bout the kidney, Keyhole. :-/

I agree-- vinyl has it's place.

I'll never understand that logic...where do you see shakes or shingles naturally?  The average vinyl does look bad but they have some shingle and shake stuff that looks like the wood stuff too well for anyone but those staning right next to it to tell.  I prefer unfinished or lightly finished wood myself and I think when you paint wood you might as well go vinyl, but to each his own.

Changed my mind.  Vinyl looks very natural ...........on bat.  Seed her on a roof for half price.  Not likely. ::) ::) ::)

Thank you Daddymem

I only wish--well sort of.

(does anyone know how to use the tekst-toppie smiley--it sure looks like you can put anything you want on the sign, but I haven't figured it out)

I in the "no %^&&*!! vinyl" camp.

(first or second cuts from the sawmill?  bark removed by you?  buy up a whole load of logs and make a vertical log cabin (also bark removed by you)?

(somebody somewhere in an isolated part of the county had the local sawmill cut enough off each side of his logs that they fit together very nicely. for his vertical log cabin.  A whole heck of a lot less in the way of standing around with a draw knife taking off bark--and a whole lot less chinking)

Rammed earth?  with nice white clay from the kaolin mines?  Straw bale, cob with the same clay as plaster?

I don't see an easy way to change toppie, Amanda.

I thought you might see it my way, Keyhole.
