On the Whole Earth Catalog, building for yourself, and a peek at his new Tiny Homes book.

I had one of those Whole Earth Catalogs    :)

Yea, me too.

My link didn't really embed the player like yours did.

Oh, wait - there's now a button for that!

Here's where Don shows us how to do this... http://countryplans.com/smf/index.php?topic=11405.0

I removed the   s  from the https   part of the url. It was just a hunch that the mod was not written to take the "s = secure" part of the url.

I think I'll write the mod author about that.  I don't ever recall seeing a 'secure' http   link at YouTube.   ???

Common thread here I'd imagine.  I bought one at a rummage sale when I was about twelve, all used and dog eared.  Reading through it was like seeing what was possible. It turned up recently in a box, and upon retrospect, it really was quite a broad education. No topic was covered deeply, but each contained well chosen material and provided an introductory path that, if followed, could lead to real understanding and mastery of a skill or idea.

I just borrowed Lloyd Kahn's "Builders of the Pacific Coast" book. from the local library. Looking at the houses in it, they seem from a different time.  Even when compared to what many are building here, the houses he documents are freer, more experimental, and extremely innovative. For better of worse, most here are doing their best to make the building inspector happy, and there is not much room for  experimentation and innovation.

I don't even know if that sort of house is even possible anymore. As he says "People had time to explore and learn new things".

Today driving home from a weekends cleanup work on my land, I was listening to a local radio show about the new "green" building codes that Albuquerque is considering adopting, that almost seem to make use of professional contractors and highly engineered materials mandatory. Kahn is talking about a different time, and its sad to have lost that.  I like this CountryPlans community because it really keeps Kahn's spirit alive.

If I were to guess, I'd say John's plans derive a lot from Lloyd Kahn and his peers thinking.  His innovation is really alive in these forums and that's heartening.

Thanks for posting this John.
