one septic system - 2 buildings ?

Has anyone investigated having a 3 bedroom septic system installed, and having 2 buildings connected to it?  Say a 2 bedroom cabin, plus a small one bedroom self-sufficient "guest quarters" (w/ bath and kitchen) ?   

I am going to contact the state on this but wondered if anyone has done this or researched it.

I guess it would depend mostly on codes,rules and regs for your area.  Mechanicly it would be no different than having bedrooms split in a house at opposite ends.  As long as you install both lines with the correct slope to a "Y" .  A "T" would be too abrupt.  The biggest problem might be sizing it to those areas combined.  Being the main will have 2 BR, Kitchen, Bath and the guest haveing 1 BR, kitchenette and bath.  Not sure you would get by with 180 lf of field.

   As long as both homes are running downhill, have the appropriate sized tank and leach field.   No sudden bends to connect the two.   And, clean-outs for each run.

   The local inspectors can help determine size of tank and field.

As always- Local rules apply. In Greenville County, SC, they didn't have any problem with it as long as the system was properly sized for the number of bedrooms. In my case, I want a bathroom in the barn. They seemed puzzled that I even asked.....

I agree... the system doesn't know what is hooked to it so, long as it is big enough it should be good.

We did this with our septic system at our property in WNY.  I have a cabin and my uncle has a large mobile home.  We both have drain pipe leading into the tank.

As long as the clean-outs are there and the system is appropriately designed (large enough tank and leach field), you should have no problem!

Basically you do the same thing if adding a RV spot or two to your existing septic system.  As stated stay away from T's and use Y's 'stuff' flows a lot better.     And as a always 'stuff' flows down hill of course.
