Do any of you folks live near an Amish community? I would like
to buy a high quality Amish quilt but I am afraid of getting ripped
off by some outfit on the internet.
Thanks,

Point of order: Every Amish I've ever met attended a Mennonite church. My grandfather donated 5 acres for a new church in his hometown (Kidron, OH, home of Lehmann's hardware) and a vast majority of the attendees were Amish. I like to tell people that Mennonites are simply Amish that embrace modern conveniences. ;D

One of the things you will want to specify is whether you want hand or machine stitching. Hand stitching will seriously bump the price, but there IS a long-term quality difference...it's basically an heirloom piece. I attended a fundraiser auction for Mennonite Missions in Kidron last year where my mother spent just under $1100 for a machine stitched quilt with a printed (rather than pieced together) design. The highest price that I saw a single quilt go for was almost $7000. :o

That's only partially true Phssthpok.

There are basically three classes of Mennonites. The Old Order that shun modern convenience. They're my favorites.

The New Order that are pretty much like anyone else

There is a broad in between class. They may or may not drive cars which may or may not be all black, they may or may not have electricity and they may or may not wear traditional attire including the sin sifters (Hope there are no Mennonites here, they don't care for that term) for the women.

Well, if we're getting nit-picky, then I could point out that the lines are blurring all over the place even within the 'Amish' community. In my family (centered in and around Kidron), 'old order' is a term used interchangeably (whether correctly or not) with 'Amish', whereas we (my family) Identify as 'Mennonites' (no offense taken on the sin sifter comment ;)). Perhaps it's just a regional thing. ???

The in-between group get divided on a fuzzy line (are they relaxed Amish or hard-core Mennonite?) between the two depending on their tenets. That's my personal experience anyway. 8)

If you figure out where the lines are, please let me know. Old Order has always seemed identical to the Amish to me. I highly suspect it is more a regional thing than anything else.

Whatever they are, I have a special love for them.
I grew up with in Mennonite Country, fished, hunted and trapped with them, worked with (not for) them and learned volumes about building, farming and being a part of the land from them.

This is one of the saddest pictures I've ever taken. It is an indicator of things to come:

There is a large Mennonite community in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia and they have a Mennonite relief sale in the fall and sell quilts and hand made furniture etc. My wife and I like to attend but the Quilts do bring a high price. The families donate them to the sale and when they auction them off they always recognize the family that provided the quilt. And yes we saw many quilts sell for into the thousands and one I believe sold for $5600.00 There were cars there from all over the united states and I believe they came just to bid on the quilts.

I live north west of Charlottesville but I work in Harrisonburg 2 days a week, so I am in the area often. I buy alladin lamp parts from a shop in the Dayton farmers market regularly and we like to shop in the area so we are over on week ends several times a month.

Try to think 'glass half full'.

Maybe it's a young couple that just found out they have triplets on the way! ;)

That's where I get mine too. The Showalters own it. I've known them most of my life. Funny, the last time I was there, my 8th grade English teacher was there. He's a diehard bowhunter.
I haven't seen him for nearly fifty years but after squinting at me for a minute, greeted me like a next door neighbor.

Yes Bob is a hoot sometimes. Last time we were over they had had a death in the family and were closed. I'm headed over tomorrow to get some mantles. They had me on a list and Mrs Showalter called last Thursday and told me they were in. I have 4 lamps and no spare mantles and the power company insists on shutting our power off first time it rains or sleets or whatever.

Maybe I'll see you tomorrow.
I think I bought all the mantels they had last time I was there ;D I also have a lamp I ran across. I need their opinion about it.
I also ordered a dozen bones from the butcher shop for Zeus.
