I like kids. I love mine and my grandchildrn...As a rule, I like other peoples kids from an arms distance, I just don't want to have put up with them.

Same thing with dogs. Love them, keep them home because I have plenty to do with mine.

Today the Dog hunters were keeping well away. I didn't see one near the property line.

Their dogs were another thing.

My first stand today was near the river. He shows up. That's my rifle barrel in the picture to give an idea how close he was.

I had some chores to do so I quit hunting and did them. I moved to another stand a mile away.

This showed up on the way.

After I was in my stand, another one.

Then this one

Then these two midgets followed a deer that just crossed. I had to laugh, it was like two mice looking for an elephant,

They cut muy scent and tracked me to my stand, and decided they liked me. They stayed at the bottom of my stand for 2 hours. I finally had enough and left.

If that wasn't enough, they followed me back to the truck and wouldn't leave.

When I left, they ran down the road after me, and that makes me a little sad. The dog hunters generally don't look too hard for most dogs.

Oh...did I mention....I hate other peoples kids. :D

No need to punish the dogs...it's the owners who need the special treatment.

Sonarian, I've tried as many things on the hunters as I can....Right down to fist fights that they back away from (Usually because of what;s in my fist) Most of it I won't talk about because it may be a little illegal. I draw the line at felonies though and that's where I am now. Nothing has worked really and I'm not going to commit a serious crime.

I'm as big a dog lover as there is but the choice now is quit hunting or cure the problem.

Shooting the dogs is illegal.
Trapping Coyotes is NOT!

It's very easy for them to not let their dogs be trapped. Don't run them over of my land.

The leg traps don't really hurt them and they can be released somewhere else (Like the pound)
I have not been entirely successful making a non lethal snare. It depends on how hard they struggle.

Hunting season is all but over now. Next they start training the dogs and we go through the same thing.

I wasn't serious about the spike strip.  But I was about taking care of the people cuz they are the real problem, but I can see that you have already tried.

I don't even know the entire situation. It seems like they are hunting on your land?  And you do have a fence that I read about in another post that you lay down sometimes...can't you get them in trouble for trespassing?

I remember the whole camera thing.

Maybe you can set up day use fees: 75 dollars per person per day.  I don't know how you would enforce this but I'm just farting out ideas.

Why not big Box traps, Peter.  My granddad used to make them with a paddle on the ground.  I caught a bear in one two nights in a row.  It tore it's way out but it worked both times.

Build a few box traps on your property, and start catching the dogs.

Post signs around your property that dogs will be trapped and confiscated and a $100 cash recovery fee will be charged.  Trespassers will be prosecuted.

Heck... start with just the signs.  Big signs.

Hopefully word will get out.

You could even rig the box traps with a cheap walkie talkie that would send a signal to let you know when a trap has been sprung.  No need to check them all the time.  But you would probably also be catching 'possums, raccoons, coyotes, and other critters too.

I built 3 cage traps NM. They are too expensive and take too much time to do the whole job.

In Va, the hunters have a right to come get the dogs on posted property, holding the dogs for ransom is a felony....so I'm stuck using the leghold and snare traps.

It may be a felony to hold them, but getting info of the owner may help.  Dogs are property and the owners are liable for any damages they may cause, including private and peaceful enjoyment of your land.  I am a fan of the courts.  I would be willing to hold the dogs enough to at least get to know who the people are and walk right down to the court house to sue them.  The legal headache and the possibility of having a lien on their house or car alone might give them pause next time.  It is an all legal way to punish the owner and not the dog.

Peter, I worry about the leghold traps.  I used to run traps as a kid, and even the small traps would very often wreck havoc on the leg of a raccoon or possum.  Frequently it would break their legs, and almost always would make a nasty cut through their skin.  I did sometimes catch a raccoon that was held only by one toe and would otherwise be no worse for the wear.  I caught a Blue Heron once by it's toe as well.

I think that even though you are formally trapping 'coyotes', that you would be liable for veterinary repair of the hunting dog.  The courts would be against you.

I think you'll either have to box trap them or kill them outright.

I was thinking that you might be able to build a pen that has a teeter-totter sort of entry plank.  Or dig a pit trap.  It would be good to be able to catch multiple dogs at once (although they might fight once in the trap and unable to escape).

I also think that you won't have to catch all of them, once word gets out.
