Police say gas thefts from vehicles up

Posted: May 28, 2008 01:12 PM

Updated: May 28, 2008 01:51 PM

From NBC12 News

Thieves who target your car these days may be after one item: gas.

Police are seeing an increase in the puncturing of gas tanks or gas lines to drain the petroleum that now averages almost $4 a gallon.

Pickup trucks and SUVs are the most vulnerable to gas theft because of their height. Thieves often target plastic tanks because they're safer to drill into.

The Energy Information Administration, the average price Americans paid for gas increased by 15 cents over the past week.

The National Average for gallon of regular unleased is a record $3.94. The state average is up a penny to $3.88, while the average in Richmond is currently $3.87.

Food bank says donations may not cover summer children's programs

From NBC12 News

Food banks across the country are feeling the crunch of the slumping economy.

Closer to home, the slowdown of donations could affect several volunteer--based programs and force the Central Virginia Food Bank to pay out-of-pocket for summer meals for children.

Donations from the Postal Service food drive just a few weeks ago have replenished the bins at the Central Virginia Food Bank - if only temporarily.

Executive Director Faye Lohr says food is already flying off the shelves faster than volunteers can restore it. Warehouse space and cupboards that are usually filled to the brim now sit half-filled.

The food bank is in urgent need of several products like pastas and cereal, but has seen an additional decline of canned meats, fruits and vegetables. Those items are cruicial for the organization's summer programs.

The Central Virginia Food Bank feeds thousands of children during the school year through their Kid's Cafe program, but doubles the meals it serves during the summer.

In all, 42 children's programs across the city - such as the Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA - all depend on the food bank and its community kitchen for healthy, nutritious meals.

Since skimping on children's meals is not an option, the food bank says it will now be forced to dig deep into its own pockets and buy the food on their own.

The Central Virginia Food Bank takes donations anytime, but in a few weeks it will partner with the Performance Food Group in a food drive June 13 and 14 at several Ukrops' sround the city.

All donations from that drive will go directly to feed the children in the food bank's summer programs.

Food banks here have practically been begging for donations too.

Peter if you are like me and they hit our trucks I hope they try to run it in a car.  Shouldn't be too hard to find them afterwards.

Revelation 6:6 (New Living Translation)
New Living Translation (NLT)

6 And I heard a voice from among the four living beings say, "A loaf of wheat bread or three loaves of barley will cost a day's pay.[a] And don't waste the olive oil and wine."

On an interesting note, the NLT says Olive Oil, but KJV just says Oil.......
