Heres the one I have Bart

Actually I have 2- drills 1" hole 12 inches deep in rock in about 5 minutes depending on freshness of drill and hardness of rock- one bit should drill about 100 or so holes again depending.  Home Depot etc carries them or equivalent and sometimes rents.  I especially like the Bosch brand for speed of drilling and lightness.  They make several smaller models that drill quite well also.  In the $500 to $600 range plus bits as I remember.   ;D

Lets see- Elly took 1-2 minutes -- I took 5  - hate to arm wrestle her if she considers herself a wimp.  It must have been that my rock was harder -- or maybe her drill was bigger than mine---yeah --- that's what it was. :-[

Thanks for the info Elly and Glenn... that really helps alot. My worry has been buying or renting an expensive tool, lugging it out to my site, and then finding it doesn't have the power for the job.

Let's see, carry in a 20 lb drill and get the job done in 1-2 hours, versus lug in an 85 lb monster and get the job done in 15 minutes...except that it will probably take a couple hours extra just to lug it in and out... ok my mind's made up.

Keep in mind that the Bosch has a soft start Variable speed and likes real AC from a generator or power company.  If on a generator make sure it will run before you go.

It doesn't even care for a real sine wave inverter sometimes but will usually start if you have a regular skill saw or drill or something to run at the same time for a few seconds to get things going.  Now don't ask me why.  Just because. ;D

too funny Glen:)

I rented the gas drill becuase the generator I had at the time couldn't handle the watts of the electric drill.  In addition, the electric drill has a capacitor that can be burned out by a generator.

The running watts of the drill are much lower than the start up amps so even tho my generator could handle the running watts, it couldn't handle startup.  I can't remember the specs on the electric drill but as an example, a 2 hp air compressor takes 2800 watts to run but 7700 at start up so my Honda 3500 did not have sufficient power to take the load.  I now have a 7000.

Also the fumes from the gas drill keep the bugs away:)
Elly

The flying rock dust dust also makes good sun block.  I've burned out a couple parts on mine trying to run them on things they don't like.

Thanks for the warning... I'm thinking about getting a pair of the 2000W Honda inverter gens, which can be combined for 4000W. I poked around the web and came across a guy using an 8.8Amp/1050W Bosch running on a single 2000W Honda, so it should work out. He was putting half-inch holes in pretty serious looking rock using a drill with about half the power of Glenn's. If I expoxy the pins in, I can probably get by with 3/4" holes, so I now know the range of drills to look at.
