I put this question in my cottage building thread but got no hits ::) So decided to post it in here.

The way my dormers were framed, sheathed, and metal roofed put me into a dilemma; there are soffit vents, but no ridge vent. The top of the dormers where they meet the roof line is around 4 feet from the ridge. One possible way is to insulate the rafter bays without baffles, i.e. obstruct the vents. Short of installing a ridge vent which is tricky and expensive (the cottage is in almost no where), and foam spray them (also expensive due to the same reaon) what are my options? is sealing them with just insulation batts suffice since the 4 dormer are a very small part of the ceiling space (dormer width is 4 feet and the roof slope is 10/12)?

Thanks

Sorry I missed your original post but here is what I did.  I drilled some holes at the top side of my dormer where it meets the main roof structure to allow some airflow from the dormer into the rafter bay of the main structure.  Did it help? ???.  But as you stated it is a small area in comparison to the main vented roof.   The only other option as far as venting goes is to make or find a small gable vent to go in the peak of the dormer's gable end.
