I'm having to rethink what I'd been planning for a small cottage up the hill.  A lot of nice-looking trees would have to come down to put it where I'd thought.  And there are other advantages to putting it on the other side of the dry wash.  (some disadvantages too--the view and South are on opposite sides, for instance)

The Earthshiptm guys sometimes put low-slope  butterfly roofs on their houses partly because they don't need massive gutters to catch as much rain as possible.  Or rather the roof is the gutter.

Makes sense.  I'll be doing catching rain.

But good grief, those things are ugly!

Any ideas, thoughts, and so on?

Come on Amanda, Earthships are beautiful.;D
You could do the same sort of gutter with a shed type roof running either to the front or back. Or maybe something like this.

Becky Bee said if you build on your favorite spot, then it won't be there anymore.  Sounds like you're thinking direction is right.
