We have been blessed this year during hunting season.  It started off with my son getting a 6 pt not far from the cabin on Monday (Opening day).  Then he shot another 6 pt yesterday evening from the house.  Wasn't that difficult as he was preoccupied with two does in the field.  Sounds easy Huh.  Well at dusk the shot rang out and the buck took off across the field and jumped the fence heading toward the creek and wooded area.  My son was totally disgusted stating " I can't see why I missed it".  The shot was well over 200 yards and with the 7MM-08 he might have been stretching the barrel a bit.  Well supper time as it was dark now.  While eating we started discussing my previous years hunting experiences as well as his own.  I told him that I have shot several deer and not all lay down and surrender an occurance he has also experienced.  With that being said he pushed his plate aside and headed down in the field and fence row to look for signs that he might have hit the deer.  Sure enough there was blood at the point that he leaped the fence.  Tracking what little blood was visible to the point of another fence line the blood disappeared.  After searching for nearly 1-1/2 hrs the search was called off for the lack of lighting.  He agreed to resume the search in the AM.

Another engagement was at hand that evening anyway.  We traveled to a Birthday party where my son had a playing engagement and played music until 1:30 AM.   After a few hours sleep and the crack of dawn I woke him up and he resumed the search.  With the overnight temps in the high 20's I figured that the deer was still salvagable.  After an hour or so the deer  was found at the edge of the creek some 1000 feet south west of his last know direction.

Here is his first one.

Here is the second one. Although I would consider it a 6 pt there were two small brow tines that could be considered pts so I guess it was an 8 pt.  With the limited light at the time it was shot my son knew it had a rack and thought it was greater than it actually was.  He was satisfied and considered himself to have had a good deer season in that he could wear his shirt with a tail for another year.  ;)   Now he is preparing for bear season which starts the 5th of December.

Nice job.  I still remember the hunting trips when I was his age.  Some of my best memories.
New Mexico.  Better than regular Mexico.

Yes Frank I am sure he will.  I hope that he has other memories from future experiences.  I still recall my first couple of seasons just like it was yesterday.  For me now I enjoy the sport through the eyes of my children as I haven't hunted since 85.  Hope they learn to enjoy it as much as I did.   ;D
