Serving one's community on a volunteer basis is good for those who want to get involved. But it must be true volunteerism, not performed because of the threat of a withheld diploma. And for my money, coerced volunteerism will rarely bring satisfaction to the drafted volunteer, but may reinforce any anti-establishment tendencies the teenager may already harbor. The service becomes meaningless once it is forced.

Environcorp is another one...  in the UK the kids tell on the parents if they are not "environmentally correct"
