A scissor truss gives you a vaulted ceiling with no wood showing.  Think John's idea about beefing up the collar to make them look more beamy is the right one.

Ain't no disputing taste!

I'm not much on exposed beams, although I do know people in whose houses they work beautifully.  But I also put in a couple of styrofoam phony exposed beams when I was doing pickup for a low-rent contractor.

But consider making room for insulation.

Why I'd mostly go with either the scissors truss, the kind the guy in building with awareness used (two webs were parallel) or the truss-joist type that my auto mechanic put into his shop.
